My body - my choice? This is what the Corinthians were claiming in order to defend their sexual immorality. But here we find that in the gospel what we do with our bodies is important because our bodies were created for the Lord and for eternity. True freedom is found, not in following the bondage of sexual sin, but in union with Christ and His dwelling in our midst where we live in light of the freedom we will enjoy in eternity.

In this passage we see how the cross of Jesus Christ is God's solution to conflict in the church, and how the church has a central role in handling disputes between one another. This is how we are called to put on the mind of Christ: to approach life's difficulties based upon the wisdom and power of the cross, and to pursue a life marked by love and sacrificial self-giving for the good of others.

The life and death of John the Baptist demonstrates how words have consequences. How then can the church use words for the good and proclamation of the gospel?
