  • Safe in the Ark - Genesis 7

Genesis 7 is the chapter most people know only from nursery art — but James Drake argues it describes a real, global judgment that Scripture records with month and year. Noah enters the ark not because he earned his way in but because God had already shown him grace, and obedience always follows grace. At the center of the chapter stands one sentence: 'the LORD shut him in.' Before the first raindrop, God built the rescue, sealed the door, and promised safety inside. The parallels to Christ are exact: one entrance, one Savior, and a God who will never let His people be snatched away.

  • Faith in a Corrupt World - Genesis 6

Genesis 6 is the darkest chapter in the Foundations series: a world so corrupt that every intention of every human heart was only evil continually, and God determined to start over. In the middle of that judgment stands Noah — not righteous on his own, but a man who received grace he never earned. James Drake argues that God's judgment is not a contradiction of His mercy but an expression of it: before there was a flood, there was an ark. Like Noah, we are not called to be successful but faithful — and Christ is the ark who will carry us through every storm.

  • Leaving a Legacy - Genesis 5

James Drake takes Christchurch into Genesis 5, the chapter of begats everyone skips, and uncovers a gospel thread hidden in plain sight. Amidst the drumbeat of 'he lived and he died,' one man breaks the pattern: Enoch, who walked with God and was no more. Drawing from Hebrews 11 and Jude, Drake shows that Enoch's difference was faith — not intellectual knowledge, but the kind that places its whole weight on God. In a world running busy and broken, the question Genesis 5 presses is not how long you walked or what you accomplished, but who you walked with.

  • Two Ways to Live - Genesis 4

Kent Keller takes Christchurch through Genesis 4, organizing the chapter around two ways humanity lives before God: Abel's path of faith-filled offering and Cain's path of lip service, pride, and blame-shifting. The key is not what you bring but the heart of the offerer — as Hebrews 11 makes clear, Abel was commended as righteous 'by faith,' while Cain's refusal to rule over sin consumed him and his line became a monument to human ambition apart from God. Seth's line ends with people calling on the name of the Lord. And deeper still, Abel's blood crying from the ground points forward to the blood of Christ, which speaks a better word and calls every fallen person to the table of grace.

  • When Everything Fell Apart - Genesis 3

Kent Keller takes the church through Genesis 3, organizing the Fall around three questions: who will we believe, how will we respond, and what will we experience? From the serpent's first lie — 'Did God actually say?' — to Adam's passive silence while Eve fell, the chapter shows how doubt unravels into disobedience and disobedience into shame, death, and exile. But in the same breath as the curse, God plants the proto-evangel in Genesis 3:15: one of the woman's offspring will crush the serpent's head. When Adam and Eve took that first bite, Jesus packed his bags for Bethlehem.

  • Made in His Image - Genesis 1:26–2:25

James Drake takes the church into Genesis 1:26–2:25, the pinnacle of creation — mankind made in the image of God, both male and female, with inherent dignity and purpose before a single thing has been done. The sermon works through the imago dei (identity received, not achieved), the cultural mandate (dominion as stewardship), the Sabbath as a gift of trust, and the design of marriage — showing how two image-bearers whose distinct roles together better reflect God’s own character. The thread through every section is the same: only when you understand whose image you bear does identity, purpose, and relationship find its right shape.

  • It All Begins with God - Genesis 1:1-2:3

James Drake opens the eleven-week Foundations series on the church's one-year anniversary, starting where Scripture starts — Genesis 1:1. The argument is both simple and total: in the beginning there was God, not matter, not chance, but a personal creator who spoke everything into existence ex nihilo and has never stopped holding it together. James works through the hovering Spirit of Genesis 1:2, the seven-day week no revolution has managed to replace, and the chapel conversation with a Dodgers player that surfaced the oldest question — why us? The answer Scripture gives is love: a God who didn't need us but made us in his image to be drawn into the communion that runs from creation to Christ to the cross.

  • Greater Than All - Colossians 1:15-20

Kent Keller closes the Greater Than series with the text that launched it — Colossians 1:15-20, Paul's hymn to Christ as the image of the invisible God, the one before all things, the one in whom all things hold together. He traces what that claim actually means: Jesus is not a window through which we glimpse God at a distance but the fullness of God made visible, which means the picture most of us carry — distant, demanding, withholding — is simply wrong. The Colossian heresy that prompted the letter was the idea that Christ alone was not enough; Kent's answer is Paul's: Jesus plus nothing. He closes with Melito of Sardis, writing in the second century, preaching a God who was murdered and rose again — the blood of the cross making peace that cannot be unmade by anything we do or fail to do.

  • Greater Than Ourselves - Colossians 4:2-18

Paul closes Colossians from a Roman prison — no food unless someone carried it in, no plumbing, no assumption that a prisoner's life had value — and he does not ask to be let out. Guest preacher David McCloud of Granada Church, closing the Greater Than series, follows three things Paul does instead. He looks UP, asking God to open a door for the message rather than the cell door. He looks OUT, treating a prison as an opportunity the way three men cutting the same stones can be breaking rocks, making a living, or building a sanctuary. And he looks AROUND, ending the letter with a long list of hard-to-pronounce names because he has no intention of doing any of this alone. One of them is Aristarchus, who appears five times in the New Testament and never speaks a recorded word — he is simply present, every time, in the hardest moments. What David calls the ministry of staying, where a person's presence is a present. Your circumstances are a privilege, he says, and then, without softening it: and yes, there will be some suffering.

  • Greater Than Our Relationships - Colossians 3:18-4:1

Our culture is adrift, Jay Reynardus argues, because it has abandoned God and keeps inventing new ways to flourish without Him — each one promising a better marriage, a better way to raise children, a better life, and each one collapsing in turn.

Paul's answer in Colossians 3:18-4:1 is not a set of rules for who outranks whom. It is a household with Jesus at the centre. Reynardus works through the three relationships Paul names. Marriage, where the goal is not self-fulfilment but the glory of Christ seen in your spouse — and where the practical secret is simply to outserve each other. Parenting, where the aim is not well-mannered children who stay off drugs but children pointed to Christ, and where the fastest way to lose them is a faith that appears on Sunday and vanishes by Monday. And work, where Paul elevates the bondservant by telling him his labour matters to God, then levels the master by reminding him he has a Master too.

For anyone whose own parents were the opposite of this, the sermon turns pastoral: whatever your father was, in Christ you have a true and perfect Father who will not fail you.
