I have friend who grew up Christian and has not believed in 40 years or more. Recently he has been under spiritual attack. At fist it started as a "ghost" and he thought it was kind of cool. In the last few months things have been getting progressively dark. It is obvious now that what he is under full demonic attack. Sometimes things seem innocent enough, then escalate out of our control. Have faith that when that happens, there is help available through Jesus. You just have to seek it out.
