CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE ON THE NEWS | CHRISTELIKE PERSPEKTIEF OP DIE NUUS

In a recent Christian Perspective on the news segment on Radio Pulpit, analyst Mike Bernard discussed Donald Trump’s call for possible U.S. military action in Nigeria over rising violence against Christians. Bernard emphasized that over 7,000 Christians have been martyred in Nigeria in 2025 alone, urging the global church to take the issue seriously and pray for the persecuted. While Trump’s remarks may not lead to direct military action, Bernard said they have at least placed Christian persecution on the global political agenda, drawing long-overdue attention to the crisis in Africa’s most populous nation.

This discussion provides a clear Christian perspective on October 31st, contrasting the pagan origins of Halloween with the historic significance of Reformation Day. It explains that Halloween finds its roots in the Druid festival of Samhain, a "witch's new year" involving animal and human sacrifices, which is the source of traditions like "trick or treat" and jack-o'-lanterns. In stark opposition, Reformation Day commemorates Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses in 1517, championing the core Protestant principles of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, with Scripture as the ultimate authority. Listeners are urged to reject the "unfruitful works of darkness" and instead celebrate the rediscovery of the Gospel, aligning with biblical commands to abstain from every form of evil and to teach the difference between the holy and the unholy.

In this episode of Christian Perspective on the News with Mike Bernard on Radio Cape Pulpit, the discussion explores how Christians should respond to global and local injustices—from the Gaza conflict to incidents in South Africa—through reconciliation rather than revenge. Bernard emphasizes that true justice is rooted in forgiveness, reflecting the example of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. He urges believers to pursue peace through transformation and mercy, while acknowledging that legal consequences still have their place. The conversation highlights the need for Christians to reveal a spirit of grace in a world often driven by anger and judgment.

This discussion revisits the profound impact of the Protestant Reformation, sparked by Martin Luther on October 31, 1517. The conversation draws a powerful analogy, comparing Luther's act of nailing his 95 Theses to using a lever to move the world—his "place to stand" was the unchangeable Word of God. The segment highlights the five core principles (solas) of the Reformation: Scripture alone, Christ alone, grace alone, faith alone, and glory to God alone. It challenges listeners to move beyond cultural celebrations like Halloween and instead commemorate Reformation Day by re-evaluating their lives, churches, and society against biblical truth.
