Christians a-WOKE or a-MUCK? Or Both?

Listen Later

If you watch the news, Christians and secular, this world is moving at a hugely immense place that make it very difficult in our times to keep up with and process information. Still, there are many symbolic stories that tell what's affecting the Christian community - sometimes in negative ways. Recently, Wheaton College decided to cave in and remove a plaque that honored five heroic missionaries who were slain by the Auca Indians of Ecuador who surrendered their lives as missionaries to reach them with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Among them were Jim Elliot and Nate Saint, with three others. After a short period of seeming success, they were attacked and killed by the tribe they hoped to share the love of Christ with on January 6, 1956. It appears that much has changed in the 65 since they're martyrdom. Recently a group of students at Wheaton, who should be learning and appreciating the devout lives and sacrifice these heroes made, decided to make it a crusade to have the one plaque given by the class of 1949 to the school in honor of two of the graduates who died in Ecuador, removed because they didn't approve of the wording in the plaque. Unfortunately, Wheaton College caved and these heroes have been canceled from the institution that trained them to be the heroes and martyrs they became. This episode of 2Days Denarius tells the story of Roger Youderian, Pete Fleming, Jim Elliot, Nathaniel Saint, and Ed McCully and how their heroic mission to reach the unreachable, though resulting in the loss of their lives, later brought the conversion to Christ of the very tribe they attempted to reach with the Gospel. This also examines a change in our Evangelical culture that appears to be causing us to be far less true to the Christian faith and much more like the culture and expectations of the world around us.
