  • The Church as Light of the World
    1. Her Identity 2. Her Calling 3. Her Purpose This sermon explores the biblical doctrine of the antithesis, emphasizing the sharp distinction between the church as light and the world as darkness. It argues against both accommodation to worldly values and isolationist withdrawal, asserting that believers are called to actively shine their light through good works and gospel witness. The preacher explains that this identity is rooted in knowledge, life, and holiness mediated by God, not human merit. By living distinctively and engaging the world with truth and love, Christians demonstrate their separation from sin while pointing others toward the glory of God. The purpose of this visible faith is to lead unbelievers to glorify the Father in heaven.

  • Peace in Uncertain Times
In this episode of Contending for the Word Q&A, Dave Jenkins explains how Christians can have peace in uncertain times. Drawing from Isaiah 26:3 and Philippians 4:6–7, this episode considers the difference between worldly peace and the peace of God. Worldly peace depends on favorable circumstances, but biblical peace is rooted in the unchanging character and faithfulness of God. Christians are called to fix their minds on the Lord, bring their concerns to Him in prayer, and rest in His promises. Though uncertainty is real, God remains faithful, and His peace guards the hearts and minds of His people in Christ Jesus. • 26-08-30 AI in Christian Thought
AI in Christian Thought Faith Debate: Sunday, August 30th, 2026 (09/06/26 on 930 WFMD in Frederick, Maryland) What's "Artificial Intelligence"? Before we respond to AI, we must understand it refers to computational systems trained on massive datasets to recognize patterns, generate outputs, & simulate reasoning. It doesn't possess consciousness, a soul, or genuine understanding in a meaningful sense. Large Language Models are trained on human-generated text. They reflect/amplify whatever values/assumptions/worldviews that dominate training data. The distinction between narrow AI & general AI is critical for calibrating a response appropriately. AI is a human artifact, not a rival to humanity. It's a tool made by image-bearers, not an image-bearer itself, so calling it "intelligent" is a category error. Let's define terms carefully. This episode is part 3 of a 5-part conversation (piggybacking on a 2-part AI discussion from earlier in 2026). • Christian Doctrine (76): The Officers of the Church (Part 1)
This sermon provides a comprehensive theological examination of the office of elder within the Christian church, defining its biblical roots and distinct functions. The speaker clarifies that the terms elder, bishop, and pastor are interchangeable titles for the same role, emphasizing that elders must govern through a plurality of leadership rather than a single hierarchy. A significant portion of the message details the rigorous qualifications required for this office, categorizing them into Christian character, experiential faith, and specific spiritual gifts such as teaching ability and moral courage. The preacher argues that these standards ensure that elders possess the maturity and grace necessary to shepherd the congregation effectively and protect it from false doctrine. Ultimately, the text asserts that only Christ can equip men with the divine utterance and leadership qualities needed to serve faithfully in this capacity.

  • What Is Covenant Theology - 8/30/26
Over the course of eight weeks, Pastoral Assistant and Intern Steven Tavel will lead us in exploring one of the most beautiful and foundational doctrines of the Christian faith. Covenant theology is not merely a theological system; it is the way the Scriptures teach us about God's gracious relationship with His people. Severn Run Evangelical Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), devoted to the pursuit of Scripture, prayer, fellowship, and worship as we seek to faithfully reach our community for Christ.
