As those made in the image of God our hearts cry out for justice. But if all we have to hope for is temporal justice, then we will never be satisfied. Our hope must be in the eschatological, end-times justice God brings on the last Day. It is to this justice that Psalm 110 now turns, and in the final verses of this psalm we see the judgment that the Lord Jesus will bring when He comes in glory. May these words bring warning to the unbeliever and hope to the one who eagerly awaits His return.

Anyone who has ever held two jobs knows the strain and the exhaustion of dual responsibilities. Not so with Christ--He holds three offices perfectly and simultaneously: Prophet, Priest, and King. For the purpose of the passage before us, however, we see Christ in His role as King and Priest, two roles that would have been mutually exclusive in Israel. So, how is it that the Messiah is both a King and a Prophet? Psalm 110 helps to answer that question, and it also shows us the absolute necessity of Christ as the King-Priest of God's people.

Psalm 110 is, as Charles Spurgeon puts it, a "marvelous Psalm, where every word has an infinity of meaning." It is the most quoted Psalm in the New Testament, and verse one is the most quoted Old Testament verse in the New. It is filled with glorious mysteries concerning the person and work of Christ. So, as we approach this text, may we be transformed as we gain deeper insights into the glories of Christ.

A major problem in the Church today is this: we have all of our doctrine straight, we live lives of faithfulness, but we forget that all of that doctrine and all of that faithfulness is supposed to be centered upon a person. A glorious person. A beautiful person. A person who deserves out highest thoughts and our deepest affections. We need to be captivated once more by the beauty of Jesus. That's what this Psalm helps us to do: look with fresh eyes at the glory of Christ, and in knowing Him more, may we love Him more.

This Psalm confronts us with serious questions, questions to which we must have answers, for they are questions of eternal significance. Who is God? Who are we? Who is this King of Glory of whom the scripture speaks? As we walk through this Psalm of David's we'll see the answers, and by God's grace we'll believe.

Last words. We're all going to have them. At some point in time we will all utter our final words on this mortal coil. You can tell a lot about a person from his last words: what he values, what he deems important enough to remember and pass on, in what he is hoping. In our passage we read David's last words, and in them we'll see what the King of Israel believed was most important, what he wanted to pass on to future generations, and as we find what he values, we'll discover that it's what we ought to value as well.

The book of Judges ends on a dark note: there is no king in Israel, everyone is doing what is right in his own eyes. This description fits well with our own lives--it's an indictment against our wicked rebellion. But it's also an ending filled with hope. God will not let His people rebel forever; He will send a righteous King to conquer their sinful, wayward hearts, and subdue their stubborn wills to Himself. So, as we come to the end of a book filled with a continuing downward spiral of sin and despair, may we also be reminded of the One to whom the entire book points: the Lord Jesus, the true King of Israel.

Israel is in a state of despair! In the fallout of the civil war one tribe is on the verge of extinction! Something must be done. And so, Israel begins the process of healing. As the text before us reveals, however, the nation attempts to heal itself through its own devices and schemes, never listening for the Word of the Lord. And if we're not cautious, the same mindset will creep into our lives and our churches. Therefore, let us learn from this passage that Israel's only hope and ours is Christ Jesus alone.

Judges chapter 20 is probably not on anyone's list of favorite Bible stories, with its place names, descriptions of military tactics, and death tolls. Yet, as the Apostle Paul teaches us, all Scripture is profitable and teaches us how we ought to live, thus God deemed this narrative of Israel's civil war necessary for our sanctification. For, Israel is not alone in the fight against sin, every Christian also is engaged in a life-or-death fight against indwelling sin. The text before us helps us to consider how we ought to engage in this struggle, and so it is worthy of our attention.
