  • Dr. Thomas Kline The untold story of the opioid crisis (update)
On this epsisdoe we have Dr. Thomas Kline back on to get an update on his work advocating for people in pain.
Millions of peopel with painful conditions, diseases and disorders are being undertreated, denied treatemnt or treated like they are a convicted criminals simply becuaes they are in pain.
Dr. Kline shares with us facts that dispute the current opioid crisis narrative that's being pushed by the media, the government and self-serving organizations who benefit from spreading opioidphobia.
He explains that opioid addiction is rare and its terrible for those that have the genetically misshapend chemical receptors. He beleives that its a medical isuse and law enforcement should stay out of it.
Opioid addiction occurs in 4 out of a 1000 people. Those without it and who are in pain shouldnt be denied treatemtn or treated like criminals simply because they need to have opioids for pain managment.
Theres a lot of money at stake and I feel thats the reason why the the lies and misinformation are persisting. In fact the Federal Government last year allocated $6 billion dollars to the DEA, local and state agencies, rehab centers and a billion dollars for opioid addiction vaccine reserach, which is pure pseudoscience.
Dr. Kline also reminds us that opioids are miracle drugs that work, that they are safe and that they've been used for thousands of years.
Don't just swallow what the media, the FDA, the DEA or the CDC are peddling concerning  the so-called opioid epidemic. People in pain are not the problem. Prescription pain medicine is not the problem. T
Dr. Kline says that we have an overdose problem within the addiction community and it's caused by the black market, which is created by Drug Prohibition. If people who are addicted had access to unadulterated drugs, drug oversodses would be almost eliminated. Drug education, drug maintence and drug subsittution programs are the answer, not politics,  police or the prison system. If you have a painful disease or know somoenoe who does please listen and share. There are millions of Americans suffering unnecessarily becuse of ignorance, fear and greed.
I want to thank Dr. Kline for his work advocating for those in pain who have been mostly forgotten by those in power.
Here at The Chronically Human Podcast we advocate for the End to the War on Drugs . We do so because of our principles as well as for practical purposes. Every individual owns themselves and has the natural right to ingest or not ingest a substance. By ending the War on Drugs we will compassionately help people who are addicts instead of just punishing them, and also make sure people in pain get the treatment they deserve.
     Thanks for listening.

  • Jason Pye - VP of Legislative Affairs at Freedomworks
In this episode we have a great talk with Jason Pye. He is a Vice President of Legislative Affaris at Freedomworks who was instrumental in getting a major criminal justice reform bill passed last year.
Jason is a Libertarain leaning lobbyist trying to bring the ligth of liberty to the halls of Washington DC. Jason talks with deep knowledge about the recently passed "The First Step Act."
This major piece of Criminal Justice Reform legislation, which he helped get passed, will bring much needed relief for those who've been the victims of the draconian War on Drugs laws of the 80's and 90's. He also recounts what it was like to be in the Oval Office when the offical signing was done.
The First Step Act is a big step in helping to fix a  broken criminal justice system and it was great to hear, from someone in the trenches, about how this historic piece of legislation got passed, and about the people that its going to help.
If you care about individual freedom, criminal justice reform and living in a more just society then please listen and share.

  • Howard Bloom - Author, Scientist, Polymath
A very interesting and enlightening disucussion with author and scientist Howard Bloom.
He tells us about his experiences which led him write his latest book "How I accidentally Started the Sixties".  Which is a fascinating read and I highly recommend it. He recounts his incredible life from boyhood genius, to psychedlic guru, to running the biggest music PR firm in the 70's and 80's, to his battle with serious health issues and up to his many fascinating books about science, evolutionary psychology and the future of humanity. We also take a deep dive into his book "The Genius in the Beast: A radical re-vision of Capitalism". He shares his take on the history of Capitalism and how it can save the world.
Another topic we discuss is his battle with Chronic Fatigue syndrome. He goes into detail about how he went from being bed bound to regaining his heatlh and he accomplished that.
In his book "The Lucifer Princple - a scientific expedition into the forces of history" he has an excerpt called "isolation the ultimate poisoin" which explains why being chronically sick is so hard on humans. Speaking from soenoen who's bee chroncially ill for 30 years that exceprt is explanation thatI've ever read about what it's like to be sick, in pain and socially isolated.
Howard is a very intelligent and he has strong opinions as well. He does share his negative opinion about the job Trump  is doing in the first 8 minutes or so of the podcast. (this was recorded July 2018). After that we have a political free discussion about how indivdiuals voluntarily competing and cooperationg can accomplish anything. Thanks for listening.

  • Dr. Thomas Kline - The other side of the opioid crisis
Dr. Kline and I had a fantastic conversation and we hope to have him on again very soon. We talked about how we got to where we are today with the "opioid crisis" and solutions for helping people with chronic physical pain, as well as those with biologically caused opioid addiction.
Dr. Kline has dedicated his life to healing. He has been a doctor for 42 years, he did his residency at Stanford, and has worked at Harvard Med as well as Boston Children's hospital - he now resides and runs his own practice in North Carolina.
You can follow his work on Medium.com

One of the main topics we covered was surrounding how much misinformation, deceptive information and out right lies are being peddled by those whipping up the masses, which in turn, is causing widespread and unwarranted fear. Dr. Kline is currently focused on eliminating that irrational fear, which is propelling the current war against pain patients, by educating the public, doctors and legislators about the truth concerning opioids.
Dr. Kline explained the biological mechanisms for addiction. He factually broke down the differences between addiction "A" disease versus addiction "B" disease - which is the type that those with true opioid addiction have. It is a receptor polymorphism (deformed receptor) and 80% of people with addiction "B" are exposed to opioids in high school.
Those without the misshaped receptors don't take the "magic carpet ride" when they take opioids, unlike those with the physical elements that cause addiction "B" experience.
He went all the way back to 1915 and told the story of how prohibition started and the status of the current War on Drugs and how it is causing havoc for pain patients and the doctors who are trying to help them.
He urges for addiction and chronic pain treatment to be returned back to the medical system. Currently those with the horrible disease of addiction are treated like lepers and have no place to go. Dr. Kline advocates for medically assisted addiction treatment which proves successful in most cases - and the government doesn't have to or need to get involved.
We talked about the almost religious nature of how the anti-opioid folks are going after doctors and patients. Dr. Kline explained that its much like the Salem Witch Trials which were more wide spread than you think.
He also spoke about why we have the separation of Church and state in this country. Back in the Pilgrim days there were religious courts that could and did kill people for not conforming to social norms. This has direct implications for how the opioid crisis is being prosecuted.
We also touched on how the chronic pain patients in America are being treated and how it's analogous to how no one wanted to help people with AIDS back in the 80's. I've personally had doctors refuse to "take ownership" of certain health issues I have because it would have compelled them to be responsible for relieving my pain. Which most doctors would rather not deal with patients with pain.
Dr. Kline did advocate for ending drug prohibition but honestly added he doesn't have all the answers. We discussed briefly Portugal and Switzerland's take on ending the War on Drugs. He did ask the audience to send him suggestions about how we can start eliminating the destructive War on Drugs.
If you too have an idea please reach out to Dr. Kline on Twitter: @ThomasKlineMD
Overall Dr. Kline believes as I do, that education and presenting the facts persistently are the only ways to change the minds of the public and the politicians.
He even advocates the truthful teaching of teenagers -about opioids in high school and explaining that if they feel or see someone experiencing insane amounts of euphoria from taking opioids, very likely they could be addicted and they'd know to get immediate medical help.
He also talked about we could save almost all the people who overdosed on opioids by medically managing addiction, removing the criminal justice system from the practice of medicine, ending the War on Drugs, educating people on the dangers of mixing drugs, and by teaching those in the addiction community how to resuscitate one of their own, with a simple $20 device that could help their friend breathe and stay alive, in case of an overdose.
Finally we touched on the FDA July 9th meeting - in which Dr. Kline will be in the audience attending. The meeting is the first time since the most recent opioid hysteria swept the nation that the FDA is actually going to talk to the people most affected by the new medical inquisition that has caused wide spread damage to individuals in pain, as well as to the doctor patient relationship.
I you are a pain patient please leave your comment on the FDA website. They are taking comments until Sept 9th 2018. By law they have to read those comments and enter them into the official record.
Here you can make your voice heard. Currently there are only 851 comments. Let's get they to 1000 by tomorrow.

At one point everyone has experienced terrible physical pain. Now think if that pain never went away. That's what living with chronic pain is all about. And those in pain should have access to the safest, most effective pain relieving substances known to man - opioids.
Thanks to Dr. Kline for the informative and enjoyable conversation.
Please share this post to all those that you know who are suffering in pain and can't get help or if you suffer from chronic pain as well. Dr. Kline is a shining beacon of compassion in the darkness of despair, that is the current atmosphere of the opioid hysteria.
