There are many opinions about this text and the millennium. But the main point of the text is that Satan, the dragon, will ultimately be judged and sentenced to an eternity of torment. And the same is true for all those whose names were not written in the Lamb’s book of life. There is a real sober nature to this text. Evil is officially ending.

This picture of Jesus is intimidating. He is dressed as a warrior who is going to battle. All those who are not with Him are against Him. And He captures them all - the beast, the false prophet, and all those who worshiped the beast were captured. The beast and false prophet were thrown into the lake of fire. And we are with Him. We get to participate in His victory over evil as followers and worshipers. He is victorious.

'Babylon’ is representative of the anti-God kingdom of the world. In these verses, John sees that Babylon is exposed and destroyed. The city is thrown down like a millstone into the sea. The end is happening. At the same time, the people of God are being joined together with Jesus as His Bride. They are rejoicing over His justice and sovereignty. While the funeral of the world is happening, the people of God are feasting in His presence at the marriage supper of the Lamb. He has brought her out of the world and into His presence safely.

As God’s wrath is poured out on the earth, it is the idols of the world that are shown to be impotent and disappointing when compared to the true and living God. The birth of Jesus was not a silent night - but one where a dragon was waiting to devour the child. There is a great enemy, Satan, who has desired to distract and lure away all those who would be called the people of God. He has worked through two beasts to occupy the world with concerns that do not connect with God. This group forms an anti-trinity who work for the destruction of all that God has made. But despite the work of the demonic group, the Lamb and His people conquer. All those who do not bow to the Lamb will be removed, while all those who submit will rejoice.

John has an open door to see into heaven, the place of God. He sees creatures, elders, crowns, rainbows, worship, thrones - and a throne. There is really only one throne that matters. And on that throne seats the one with all power, control, authority, love, and the only one worthy of worship. He is sovereign over all the events in this world, which is evidenced by Jesus opening the scrolls to work out His plan to be glorified forever.
