When a church is struggling, the first question is often, “What should we change?”
Should we change the music? Update the website? Start another program? Maybe find a younger pastor?
Those questions can have their place. But before we decide what to change, we need to understand what is happening.
Imagine going to a doctor who prescribes treatment before asking about your symptoms. We wouldn’t feel very confident in that diagnosis.
Church revitalization requires careful listening, too.
In Revelation chapters two and three, Jesus addresses seven churches. His words are specific to each congregation. He recognizes faithfulness, identifies problems, and calls for a response.
That should shape how we approach revitalization. Every church has a particular story, and we need to understand ours.
