  • Episode 55 - CFM July 22 - July 28 Part I
LDS Study Session seeks to generate reflection and about areas in the Restored Gospel. Whether it's Come Follow Me, a General Conference talk or a recent Gospel Topic, hopefully you'll find something to keep the Spirit of Christ in your life. @mattsroberts90
We begin looking at the Come Follow Me study for the week, beginning with Paul's determination to follow the Spirit's guidance within his missionary work - where he should go and what he should do. We look particularly at how the revelation is received and how it dissuaded him from his original inclinations.
Orson Pratt - Even when some of the very greatest revelators that we have any record of undertook to do things of their own accord, they were led directly different from their own judgments, in regard to their missionary labors. Paul had, at a certain time, a great desire to visit a certain place; such desire arose from his own natural judgment; but the Holy Ghost forbade him. Here it required a new revelation to know whether his own inclinations should be followed or not. Again, we find that the revelations of the Most High were very necessary in the case of the travels of these missionaries among the inhabitants of the earth.

Have you heard about the changes to Children and Youth programmes in the Church? We study the scripture that underpins the changes her and why children and youth can be excited for the changes that will take place in 2020. Elder Spencer J Condie: We read in the Gospel of Luke that “Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” Inasmuch as our earthly quest for perfection involves becoming more like the Savior, then we, too, should increase in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

We conclude this week's study with a further look at the importance of names, this time the name of the Church that Christ restored to the Earth in the last days. What's the reason for the name of the Church and why are it's members called saints?
President Russell M Nelson: Despite its use in ninety-eight verses of the Bible, the term saint is still not well understood. Some mistakenly think that it implies beatification or perfection. Not so! A saint is a believer in Christ and knows of His perfect love. The giving saint shares in a true spirit of that love, and the receiving saint accepts in a true spirit of gratitude. A saint serves others, knowing that the more one serves, the greater the opportunity for the Spirit to sanctify and purify.

Join the discussion where we continue the study of the Come Follow Me lesson this week. We look further into the name of Christ and what this means to those humble followers who strive to be like the Saviour.
President Dallin H Oaks: There are other meanings as well, deeper meanings that the more mature members of the Church should understand and ponder as he or she partakes of the sacrament.
It is significant that when we partake of the sacrament we do not witness that we take upon us the name of Jesus Christ. We witness that we are willing to do so. (See D&C 20:77.) The fact that we only witness to our willingness suggests that something else must happen before we actually take that sacred name upon us in the most important sense.

Join us as we continue our study of this week's Come Follow Me. We dive into the principle of revelation and how often it is received line upon line and many things may be brought to our remembrance. We also consider the way revelation is received for the Church.
Elder D Todd Christofferson: At the same time it should be remembered that not every statement made by a Church leader, past or present, necessarily constitutes doctrine. It is commonly understood in the Church that a statement made by one leader on a single occasion often represents a personal, though well-considered, opinion, not meant to be official or binding for the whole Church. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that “a prophet [is] a prophet only when he [is] acting as such.”

LDS Study Session seeks to generate reflection and about areas in the Restored Gospel. Whether it's Come Follow Me, a General Conference talk or a recent Gospel Topic, hopefully you'll find something to keep the Spirit of Christ in your life. @mattsroberts90
Join us as we discuss the power of small and simple things - positive and negative. Do we consider how we spend our valuable time and how will this impact on our eternal destination?
Elder Richard C Edgley: Satan’s sales pitch as he sends us off to fill our bags is “Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die” (2 Ne. 28:7). His invitation may seem enticing and convincing. Nephi describes his sales techniques as pacifying, flattering, and lulling as he declares, “All is well” (2 Ne. 28:21–22). Among other things Satan would have us put in our bags is immorality in all its forms, including pornography, language, dress, and behavior. But such evil deeds bring emotional distress, loss of spirituality, loss of self-respect, and lost opportunity for a mission or temple marriage, and sometimes even unwanted pregnancy. Satan would enslave us by having us put drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and other addictive behaviors into our bags.

We commence looking at the Come Follow Me study for this week. We learn together about the opening of the Gospel to the Gentiles and how this broke cultural traditions of the Church at the time. However, the Church was led by revelation.
Elder Dieter F Uchtdorf: Implied in such a statement is another of Satan’s deceptions: that belief is available to some people but not to others. There is no magic to belief. But wanting to believe is the necessary first step! God is no respecter of persons. He is your Father. He wants to speak to you. However, it requires a little scientific curiosity—it requires an experiment upon the word of God—and the exercise of a “particle of faith.” It also takes a little humility. And it requires an open heart and an open mind. It requires seeking, in the full meaning of the word. And, perhaps hardest of all, it requires being patient and waiting upon the Lord.

Join us as we conclude this week's Come Follow Me study with the experience of Saul traveling to Damascus. Just why we he so ready to convert to the Lord despite persecuting the Saints so much? What can we learn about receiving revelation like this?
Elder Dieter F Uchtdorf: The truth is, those who diligently seek to learn of Christ eventually will come to know Him. They will personally receive a divine portrait of the Master, although it most often comes in the form of a puzzle—one piece at a time. Each individual piece may not be easily recognizable by itself; it may not be clear how it relates to the whole. Each piece helps us to see the big picture a little more clearly. Eventually, after enough pieces have been put together, we recognize the grand beauty of it all. Then, looking back on our experience, we see that the Savior had indeed come to be with us—not all at once but quietly, gently, almost unnoticed.
