Join us today as we continue our study of the Come Follow Me materials and look at Moroni's final entries. We consider the importance of gathering often as Saints and the blessing of the physical Church.

Robert E Parsons: "Is it not faith-promoting to know that the Church in earlier dispensations not only practiced faith, repentance, and baptism, but also recorded the names of members and watched over and nourished them that they might be kept in the faith? . . . President Gordon B. Hinckley commented on the tragedy of losing souls after once having brought them into the kingdom: 'The greatest tragedy in the Church . . . is the loss of those who join the Church and then fall away. With very few exceptions it need not happen. . . . There must be a nurturing and strengthening during this difficult season of a convert’s life. A tremendous price has been paid for his presence in the Church. . . . it is imperative that these precious souls be welcomed, reassured, helped in their times of weakness, praised for what they do, given responsibility under which they may grow strong, and encouraged and thanked for what they do.'"

Join us today as we continue our study of the Come Follow Me materials and look at Moroni's final entries. We consider the importance of the sacrament prayers and we reflect on the conditions outlined in both.

John W Welch: "[A]t the conclusion of Benjamin’s speech, his people entered into a covenant, saying 'we are willing . . . to be obedient to [God’s] commandments in all things that he shall command us,' after which they agreed to 'take upon [themselves] the name of Christ' and obligated themselves to 'remember to retain the name written always in [their] hearts' (Mosiah 5:5-12). These three specific promises not only reappear in Moroni 4, but are still the essential elements of the sacramental prayers as they are used today."

Join us today as we continue our study of the Come Follow Me materials Moroni's interval and the end of the Jaredite record. We consider how revenge and no humility led to this destruction and we consider the characters of Coriantumr and Shiz.

Book of Mormon Central: The disturbing account of the death of Shiz was a source of ridicule by some early readers of the Book of Mormon. But accurately describes an attested neurological phenomenon. Both Coriantumr and his rival were exhausted (Ether 15:29-30). If Coriantumr’s blade strayed a little higher than he intended, passing through the base of the skull, at the level of the midbrain, this would have caused decerebrate rigidity. This neural reflexive action occurs when the upper brain stem is severed from the brain causing muscles in the arms and legs to contract and would have caused Shiz’s body to rise up on his hands before bleeding to death. Simultaneously, the respiratory reflexes, which are controlled by the lower brainstem would have briefly retracted and expanded as well. As blood poured into the trachea his rib cage would expand making the eerie sound of struggling for breath. This type of phenomenon was first reported in a medical journal in 1898, many years after the publication of the Book of Mormon.

Joseph Fielding McConkie and Robert L Millet: “These painful consequences of war were the direct result of their own wickedness, which in turn produced a literal fulfillment of earlier prophecies wherein the Lord had promised peace and protection to the inhabitants of this land if they would obey him and destruction if they did not . . . . Much if not all of the pain and suffering that could be viewed as ‘the wrath of God’ came by means of the meanness, the cruelty, and the thirst for blood that filled the hearts of the spiritually sick and dead.”

Michelle D Craig: “Of course, all of us will fall short of our divine potential, and there is some truth in the realization that alone we are not enough. But the good news of the gospel is that with the grace of God, we are enough. With Christ’s help, we can do all things. The scriptures promise that we will ‘find grace to help in time of need.’ The surprising truth is that our weaknesses can be a blessing when they humble us and turn us to Christ. Discontent becomes divine when we humbly approach Jesus Christ with our want, rather than hold back in self-pity.”

Join us today as we continue our study of the Come Follow Me materials Moroni's interval and the end of the Jaredite record. We consider the power of hope and we reflect on the relationship between trials and witnesses of faith.

Elder Jeffrey R Holland: “One is inclined to say that surely God could block such an experience if he wished to. But the text suggests otherwise: ‘this man . . . could not be kept from within the veil.’ This may be an unprecedented case of a mortal man’s desire, will, and purity so closely approaching the heavenly standard that God could not but honor his devotion. Given such faith, we should not be surprised that the Lord would show…him visions that would be relevant to the mission of all the Book of Mormon prophets and to the events of the latter-day dispensation.”
