How does it feel to never give up? God never gives up on us. The Bible is full of examples of people on whom God did not give up. As Christians we should never give up on ourselves. We keep striving to live as God has instructed us.

In this passage we detect jealousy on the part of Herod toward Jesus. They had never even met, but Herod appears to be jealous of Jesus’ popularity with the people. But Jesus knows his Father’s plan for his life on earth and he is undaunted. How does jealousy creep into our lives? How do we respond?

We cannot defeat temptation by ourselves. The power to fight temptation is in the Holy Spirit. We must stay connected to God on a daily basis so that power is available to us when temptation comes our way.

It is easy to stand here in the valley of our comfort. We know what to expect and what is expected of us. But Christ calls us to the mountain top to receive a new vision. At the end of this passage Jesus says, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” He was referring to the Isaiah prophesy that he was anointed to proclaim good news to the poor, freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. Jesus knew his purpose on this earth. What is your purpose?

As the wise men followed the star to find the newborn king of the Jews, so we too must follow the star. In this world of conflict and suffering and pain, we must forget about the scars and follow the star! Our focus must be on Jesus the Christ.
