Spiritual healing. Is there such a thing as “good guilt”? Do we do things that are not good for our emotional health such as paralyzing ourselves through something like guilt? We are all works in progress and we all deserve compassion. Guilt hurts but it’s so much better than doing something harmful and not feeling anything at all. People feel guilty about things and sometimes they feel guilty about feeling guilty. What can we do about it?

UU congregations like ours have, for many people, become the place that they want to come home to. That’s what makes it so important for us to welcome people into our congregation. We will build a home for ourselves and for our children that will endure long past when we are gone…a place that will take hold inside of us until it becomes a part of us that we will not forget.

Moments of spiritual clarity are so important that by themselves, they aren’t enough, even if we other people with us when it happens… if we don’t continue to ask hard questions and we don’t have to be open to new ideas, we end up stuck in a spiritual place that is unquestioned, unexamined and ultimately superficial. Unitarian Universalism can be exhausting. Why do we do this thing?

When I see what is going on around me, I ask myself: Where am I in relationship to what is happening around me? How does it affect me? How does it affect others? What resources do I have access to at my disposal to change this? What do Unitarian Universalists do? What do you do?

This is the final sermon of a 3-part series, based on the 3 parts of our children’s benediction; this sermon is ‘You are Powerful’. Today, Rev. Teitel told the story of Cane and Abel, focusing on it as a story of role models. What kind of role model did we each grow up with? What are we supposed to learn from our role models? What if we fail? If you have power over others instead of inequity, that can be an act of violence. What can we do about this? What is the answer? What do we know about forgiveness? Forgiveness is what we as UUs must do. It is our job to build a more caring and compassionate world.
