Jesus follows the Beatitudes with a mandate to be the Salt and the Light of our world. A mandate is more than a metaphor. It is the call of the church to impact our world for the glory of God.

Jesus is describing a revolutionary way of life compared to what we know as normal. Just look around at what has happened to truth, faithfulness, sacrifice, and humility in our culture. To pursue God, and what He calls "truly blessed", is to turn our backs on the power brokers of our time, step out of this world's parade, and join a new band of followers.

People today are not concerned so much about a pure heart as they are with a good image edited of any flaws. But we have a problem that begins deep in our heart, and we are blind to it without God's mercy and grace to provide us with a way back.

It is no surprise that meekness is seen as weakness in a world of survival-of-the-fittest. Our hunger to stop the endless cycle of violence and revenge, perpetuated by injustice and unforgiveness, requires someone to admit their weaknesses.
