In response to the pandemic, pastors were forced to quickly find ways to do church in a digital or hybrid environment. Now, with church rhythms a bit more settled, many leaders are asking bigger questions like, “What role does God want the church to play in this unique cultural moment? And how to we reach the next generation?” This week on the podcast, to help explore this important topic, David and Carey are joined by Mark Batterson, author and lead pastor of National Community Church in Washington, D.C.

Just a few weeks ago, nearly half of U.S. pastors said one of the greatest challenges they’re facing right now is ministry to children and youth. This week, Carey and David drill deeper into this stat with student ministry leaders Leslie Mack, Director of Content for Switch (6th-12th grade) at Life.Church, and Shane Sanchez, Inside Out (Senior High) Director at Gwinnett Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Together, they offer clarity and direction to pastors who are struggling with next gen ministry in this difficult time.

As we enter into what is traditionally thought of as the "back-to-school" season, millions of young people are being forced to adapt to new systems and circumstances. To help us think about how to love and serve our youth in these challenging times, David and Carey are joined by Dr. Kara Powell, author and Executive Director of the Fuller Youth Institute. She shares a number of practical insights for reaching young people in a digital context and uncovering the mental health challenges many of them are facing.

David and Carey are joined by Jon Tyson—author, pastor and church planter in New York City (and COVID survivor, along with his family). Latest ChurchPulse Weekly polls show pastors are feeling great personal discouragement and burnout. Jon echoes these sentiments mentioning he and his staff have been working harder than they ever have before. David, Carey and Jon look at the opportunity to continue reaching people online and how, in some ways, the pandemic is inspiring churches to take advantage of digital ministry opportunities that have been available for years. Jon also encourages leaders who feel directionless right now to aspire to meet the needs of their specific people, instead of pursuing an arbitrary definition of “good leadership.”

Only 11% of leaders surveyed in the latest ChurchPulse Weekly poll report feeling "extremely well-equipped" to lead in this present moment. Most of us can relate to this sense of uncertainty. That's why this week, Carey and David are joined by Nona Jones, Director of Faith-Based Partnerships at Facebook and co-pastor of Open Door Church in Florida, to discuss pastor egos, the dynamics of hybrid (in-person+digital) church and the ministry challenges and opportunities that are coming from back-to-school restrictions.
