WILLY WAINWRIGHT Willy is a violinist who began playing the violin as a child in Chicago, Illinois. He is an accomplished musician and charismatic performer whose has mastered many styles throughout the years including classical, country, bluegrass, jazz and Irish. He has performed and toured with internationally known artists. Career highlights include performing shows at the White House, Grand Ol’ Opry, The Johnny Carson Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Farm Aid. Willy also plays in the groups ‘Weatherly-Wainwright’ with his wife Jennifer Weatherly and the Maui based Gypsy Jazz group, Gypsy Pacific. He has also released solo albums that feature many of his personal favorites. Jennifer Weatherly

Jennifer Weatherly was close to her forties before her debut album was released. When she finally reached vinyl, critics relished her deep, sultry vocals, which some judged akin to Patsy Cline. Weatherly grew up in affluent Beverly Hills, her father working in television and her mother a jazz singer, but soon became attracted to the honky tonk culture and the ‘Texas Shuffles’ locals introduced her to. Eventually, after the failure of her first marriage, she moved to Nashville in 1988 to take work as a backing singer. She also worked with pop singers in Los Angeles, and toured Europe with Peter Hofmann, who eventually gave her a spot as support artist. German audiences loved Weatherly and her interpretations of old Everly Brothers and Tammy Wynette material. In 1994 she and new husband Willy Wainwright, fiddle player with Ricky Van Shelton, moved to Switzerland. Based in Geneva, she began to play European festivals with a cosmopolitan array of backing musicians, including a Peruvian percussionist, Turkish guitarist and Swiss keyboard player. She formed her own JK Records with Clay Baker as her producer and songwriter, releasing two albums in the mid- to late-90s which anchored her European popularity.

this latest album is called "Poeme" - which is the first album featuring vocal performances.

NISEI VETERANS MEMORIAL CENTER ANNOUNCES “An Afternoon with the Author” series  

The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center is proud to announce its “An Afternoon with the Author” series. The series will be conducted monthly via ZOOM conferencing, kicking off on Saturday, July 18 at 1:30 P.M. with award winning author Julie Checkoway who wrote “The Three Year Swim Club"

NVMC’s “An Afternoon With The Author” will invite published fiction and non-fiction writers from around Hawaii and the mainland into our homes. By means of ZOOM, the Center will host a different author each month to talk about their work, the story behind the story, and their personal journey on the way to having their work published.Chosen because of its tie to the Japanese-American and local experience, each author’s work connects individuals with larger truths and ideas about society.  After all, everything that happens in the world can be written and learned from literature which through the centuries has shaped civilizations, changed political systems, exposed injustice and observed the human condition. Literature is the foundation of humanity's cultures, beliefs, and traditions.

 About “The Three Year Swim Club”:

This story revolves around school teacher Soichi Sakamoto, who took a group of Japanese-American children from a Maui sugar plantation and taught them how to be champion swimmers, practicing in one of the plantation's fetid irrigation ditches. If the basis for the book doesn't sound amazing enough, how the story unfolds—Japan vying for the Olympic games, Pearl Harbor being bombed, WWII changing the world forever—allows the story and characters to evolve in uplifting and heartbreaking ways. Checkoway is equal to the task of telling this moving narrative. Her top-notch skill as a researcher allows her to bring to life the long-forgotten saga of the swim team, which she fears might otherwise "simply disappear." Depicting determination, discrimination, hope, anguish, hard work, and hard choices, Checkoway has created a sports history that is singular in its own right, and a fitting testament to the over 200 youths who swam for many reasons toward one goal: "Olympics First! Olympics Always.

to heal it’s deep wounds

by accepting we are one

all equal in Gods truth

so in need of hope

our life and the heart of humanity

all trying just to cope
