  • Recapping The Bests & Worsts From Sundance 2024! (128 kbps)
The 2024 Sundance Film Festival is wrapped, the Punch Drunk Critics have returned from Park City, and with all of the awards handed out, it’s time to talk about the best movies we saw there this year. Joining this episode of Cinema Royale is fellow critic Cortland Jacoby, who attended the festival with me once again.

We’re going to pick our favorite films to emerge from Sundance this year, which of them got acquired for distribution, and their prospects for success once released. Two movies from Kristen Stewart, a Will Ferrell road trip doc, and even a Nazi-fighting comedy featuring Too Short, we’ve got a lot to cover!

All of this and more on a new episode of Cinema Royale!

  • Talking THE BEEKEEPER And Why Jason Statham's Latest Had Us Buzzing (128 kbps)
Jason Statham has been pretty awesome for more than two decades, but is The Beekeeper his best movie yet? To talk about Statham’s latest occupational ass-kicker movie, which should be a loose-knit trilogy with The Transporter and The Mechanic, is my action homie Chris Bumbray of Joblo.com!

Of course, we talk about The Beekeeper and what makes it so amazing, the crazy mythology it sets up, the insane direction it takes, and the chances of Statham returning to kick the nest a second time! Are audiences sleeping on this one, or what? Is this Statham’s next great franchise? And what are the chances we can get David Ayer to come on and talk to us about it?

All of this and a lot more. You know how we do! We tend to veer off and talk about anything and everything under the cinematic sun!

All of this and more on a new episode of Cinema Royale!

  • ORIGIN and THE COLOR PURPLE_ Teling Black Stories With Fresh Eyes (128 kbps)
Black stories take the spotlight in this episode of Cinema Royale! I’m joined by Jamie Broadnax of Black Girl Nerds to talk about two of the biggest films of the year! First is Ava DuVernay’s Origin, a stunning adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

Next up is a film that people have been buzzing about ever since it was first announced. The Color Purple, a big screen version of the Broadway musical starring Fantasia, Colman Domingo, Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, and many more! When I say people have been buzzing, I mean equal parts excited and worried whether it can live up to the 1985 classic, or the Tony Award-nominated stage show. Big shoes to fill, for sure, especially when Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Quincy Jones are watching over your shoulder as producers!

We also ponder why NEON isn’t pushing Origin as an Oscar contender when it’s the entire reason they acquired it in the first place.

All of this and more on a new episode of Cinema Royale!

  • Snyder House Rules: Talking REBEL MOON And AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM
On today’s episode of Cinema Royale, the Snyder House Rules! Okay, well, that’s a bit silly but we are talking about two movies with a Zack Snyder connection, so he definitely rules THIS episode. Chris Bumbray of Joblo.com joins me to talk about Snyder’s massive space epic, Rebel Moon-Part One: A Child of Fire! Snyder’s anticipated Netflix film began life as a Star Wars pitch inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. That brings really lofty expectations, but does it measure up?

And finally, the Snyderverse officially comes to an end this week with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Jason Momoa returns as Arthur Curry for a battle against a vengeful Black Manta. Snyder doesn’t have anything to do with this movie anymore, but it exists within the DCEU that he started in 2013 with Man of Steel.

Enjoy this bit of silly Snyder fun right before the holidays. There are a ton of good movies out this Christmas season, so get out and enjoy them!

  • THE IRON CLAW Review_ Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White Hit Hard In Tragic Pro Wrestling Drama (128 kbps)
The Iron Claw is based on the real-life story of the Von Erich family, considered royalty in the business of professional wrestling. Led by their taskmaster father, Fritz von Erich, they ruled the Texas-based wrestling scene throughout the ’80s with a combination of athletic physical ability, charisma, and showmanship. Zac Efron stars as the eldest son Kevin Von Erich, with The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, joined by Harris Dickinson as David, and Stanley Simons as Mike, with each sibling feeling the pressure of Fritz’s demands to be the best in such a competitive world where being tough was everything. To show even the slightest weakness meant you could lose it all; the fame, the glory, the money, it could all go away in an instant.

  • Talking MAESTRO, NAPOLEON, and the return of John Woo with SILENT NIGHT
You’re tuned in to Cinema Royale, and this week it’s three three three big movies, one with Oscar aspirations, one a historical epic of dubious accuracy, and another a holiday actioner with zero dialogue. I’m joined by Chris Bumbray of Joblo.com to talk about Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro, plus Ridley Scott’s Napoleon starring Joaquin Phoenix, and John Woo’s return to American action flicks with Silent Night!

All of this plus a lot more as Chris and I do what we normally do and veer off into other subjects, like the 2015 Tom Hardy stinker, Child 44. I have no idea how we ended up there, but there we were!

Enjoy this bit of silly fun.

  • Talking ‘Freelance’, A John Cena/Alison Brie Debacle
People keep asking me “Where is your Freelance review”? You seriously thought I was going to sit down and write a review of this? There was no way I was going to spend more time writing a review than they actually spent writing Freelance. The only way I was going to review it was by talking it out with my homie, Chris Bumbray of Joblo.com, like the two seasoned pros that we are.
So this entire episode is about Freelance, which stars John Cena, Alison Brie, and is directed by Pierre Morel, director of one of the greatest action movies ever, District B13. But because this is us and Freelance is a “special” kind of movie, we go off on a few tangents so excuse us.

Enjoy this bit of silly fun.

  • Talking KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, The Rise Of Lily Gladstone, and More
Finally! This week’s episode of Cinema Royale is all about Martin Scorsese’s Native American crime saga Killers of the Flower Moon! Sorry for the delay in getting to this one but I was at a film festival all last week and on death’s doorstop all of this one! Be that as it may, this was long overdue, and joining me to talk about the film is fellow PDCer Cortland Jacoby. She’s been working the Lily Gladstone beat all year so it seems only right.
All of this and more, of course! You know how we do!
