Cinema Royale

2020 may have been a complete disaster that only Roland Emmerich could love, but it wasn’t all bad. There was quite a lot of good out there in the movie world, and while it wasn’t enough to make everything better, there was enough to at least fill an hour of our show. Since we did the Worst of 2020 last week, Cinema Royale is back with the Best Movies of 2020. And for the first time ever, we didn’t just steal one another’s picks with the exception of one.

Can you really appreciate the best without acknowledging the worst? On this week’s episode of Cinema Royale, we look with shame at the movies that made an already-horrible year just that much worse. No highs on this list, nothing but hilariously dreadful lows. Some aspired to greatness, others reached for the lowbrow and grabbed it a little too effectively. However they got here, they’re here now and before we can look at the good, we gotta look at the bad that Hollywood had to offer in 2020, including at least one which is literally in the trash bin.

Merry Christmas! This holiday season our gift to you is…less of us! Well, by about 20 minutes. We’ve still got a full bunch of reviews that you can listen to while sitting by the fire with your cup of cocoa and plate of Christmas cookies. The big one, of course, is WONDER WOMAN 1984! Does it live up to the previous movie and do well enough at the box office to warrant a third?

Plus, reviews of Regina King’s directorial debut ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI, Tom Hanks in NEWS OF THE WORLD, Robert Rodriguez’s WE CAN BE HEROES, and Pixar’s latest, SOUL!

On this week’s Cinema Royale we’ve got a full lineup to get through before we can do what we really wanna do, which is gush about THE MANDALORIAN’s season 2 finale! How fast can get everything else done? Well, you know us, not too fast at all.

We’re talking about the Carey Mulligan thriller PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN, a film everyone is buzzing about. The late Chadwick Boseman has been winning awards left and right for his performance in MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM, and we’ll take a look at what turned out to be his final role. Plus we’ve got reviews of the erotic thriller FATALE with Hilary Swank and Michael Ealy, and finally the surprisingly-good GREENLAND starring Gerard Butler.

Disney dominates this week's show as we talk about the jaw-dropping blitz of announcements from their Investor Day conference. More Star Wars movies and TV shows, trailers and reveals of Marvel's upcoming slate, and more!

This week on Cinema Royale we talk about a likely awards winner in Frances McDormand’s new NOMADLAND, then it’s on to something more colorful in Ryan Murphy’s THE PROM. That’s not the big news though, the bombshell that Warner Bros is moving their entire 2021 slate to HBOMax for simultaneous VOD and Theatrical premier, that’s the big news, and Travis and John jump deep into what this means for the future of theatrical films!

All of this after we finish rambling for through the first segment. Why can’t we get to everything we want to talk about? Can’t figure that shit out. We barely got to THE MANDALORIAN this week!
