  • The Elephant Man (1980)

Kicking off our study of the films of David Lynch, The Elephant Man is a heartbreaking look into the mistreatment of those who look different than us. John Merrick (John Hurt), born with a number of physical deformities, has been mistreated and abused all through his life until he's taken in to be studied by Dr. Treves (Anthony Hopkins). Instead of finding a monster, Treves discovers the gentle heart of John and seeks to give him a better life.

  • Emilia Pérez (2024)

Oscar-bait or revolutionary masterpiece? Can Isaac, Juzo, and Cameron survive the most infamous 2024 Academy Award-nominated movie? From the mind of Jacques Audiard comes a musical crime film, Emilia Pérez. The story follows Mexican cartel leader Emilia, portrayed by Karla Sofía Gascón, who seeks lawyer Rita's (Zoe Saldaña's) assistance to orchestrate her disappearance and transition into a woman. With notable performances by Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz, the film has sparked discussion and dissent in the film community. But fear not movie lovers, your favorite hosts have embraced the chaos for your listening pleasure! And if you don't enjoy it, well I think Cameron is going to be in big trouble.

  • Nosferatu (2024)

Robert Eggers' newest film breathes new life into the classic tale of a secretive count who has been living in a dilapidated castle in the outskirts of Transylvania, and the disturbing affair that brings him to haunt the civilized world. Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult play newlyweds who are quickly driven apart by forces darker than they can imagine. Excellent performances from Depp, Hoult, and Willem Dafoe along with incredible cinematography and atmosphere makes this film frightfully good!

  • A Different Man (2024)

A Different Man (2024) stars Sebastian Stan as a man with ‎neurofibromatosis who wishes for a new life, only to find that he's the same bitter person after he gets it. Co-starring Renate Reinsve as the flirtatious neighbor he desires and Adam Pearson as the confident and charismatic person he envies (even though he too has neurofibromatosis), the film buzzes with dark irony and comedic charm.

About Cinema Spectator

From the publisher's feed

An ECFS Productions Original Podcast: Cinema Spectator is a film history podcast that takes away the pretense that usually comes along with learning about film. Each week, we tackle the "cinematic canon" to see how films hold up for a modern audience. Can legendary pictures entertain a casual who grew up on Spider-Man reboots and Jim Carrey movies, or will they forever be relics of a bygone era? Are they only for cinema loyalists?
