Our Oscar Series continues with Tár!  This is also the next part of our Best Picture Gauntlet, wherein we take a look at each nominee in a bite-sized episode.  Tár is a dense, intelligent take on a powerful sexual predator.  Sean Jordan and I have a strong discussion.

To pair, we drink a delicious German Riesling.  (Tár mostly takes place in Berlin.)  The nose of this wine wasn’t great–there were definite notes of petroleum–but the actual flavors more than made up for it!

Our Best Picture series continues with Triangle of Sadness!  This episode begins an onslaught of Academy Award nominees, which will continue through the actual broadcast on March 12th.  Some mild spoilers lie ahead, so go stream the film on Hulu and head back this way!

To pair, we enjoy the Amrita, a sparkling white wine from Anne Amie.  It goes great with seafood, which will make much more sense if you’ve seen the film!

Our Oscar Series continues with Part III, Elvis.  Baz Luhrmann’s musical biopic drew polarizing responses from both movie fans and Elvis fans.  On one hand, Austin Butler’s performance is great, and very Oscar worthy.  At the same time, Luhrmann’s verry stylized approach somehow seems shallow and a bit too much, all at once.  We have a heated discussion.

Part Two of our Oscar series finds us discussing All Quiet on the Western Front, the epic war film now on Netflix.  It snagged a Best Picture nomination, as we have strong opinions.  For this series, we’re pairing these movies with the wines that made us love wines.  When I started at the wine store, I developed a strong taste for Australian reds, so we enjoy a burly Shiraz/Cab for this episode.

Our Best Picture Series begins with The Banshees of Inisherin!  It’s an eccentric, engaging dramedy set in Ireland, circa 1923.  The film scored nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress!  Some *mild spoilers* show up toward the end of this episode, so proceed with caution.

Our Bond Series concludes with a series highlight, Daniel Craig’s Casino Royale.  It’s an awesome adaptation that pays homage to Ian Fleming’s novel, and takes the iconic character in an exciting new direction.  To pair with this episode, we enjoy a full-bodied Bordeaux.  (In Diamonds are Forever, 007 spots the bad guys when they don’t know that Bordeaux is known as Claret in Britain.)

This entry in our James Bond series features an episode that enlivened the franchise:  Goldeneye, Pierce Brosnan’s solid debut.  Brosnan was built to play 007, and he looks relaxed and ready here.

To pair with this above-average Bond, we drink a delicious Chianti from Selvapiana.  Italian reds pop up throughout the series, both books and movies.  In From Russia with Love, Bond catches the bad guy when he orders Chianti with fish.  (Although reds and fish aren’t the faux pas they used to be.)  He also drinks Chianti in For Your Eyes Only and A View to a Kill.

Our Bond series continues with License to Kill, one of Timothy Dalton’s two entries.  He’s a polarizing 007, for sure.  Count me as one of his defenders.  I like the dark edginess he brings to the role.  Additionally, this film has killer action scenes, a strong female lead in Carey Lowell, and meatier story for Bond.  To pair with this film, we enjoy a nice Chianti.  Throughout the books, Bond is a big fan of Italian reds, so it makes sense to have one here.

Sean Jordan and I team up for a special mini-episode looking at On Her Majesty’s Secret Service!  It’s George Lazenby’s only go at the character, and the film still provokes strong opinions.  Some will tell you it’s the peak of the series, while others dismiss it as tripe.

To pair, we enjoy some delicious bubbly, the Champalou Vouvray.  It’s a sparkling Chenin Blanc from France, and it makes an excellent choice for anyone who wants high-quality bubbles on a budget.
