  • 64. Oscars Wild
“The whole goddamn thing is a meat parade.  I don’t want any part of it.”  George C. Scott, on the Oscars
Sure enough, Scott walked the walk.  Upon being nominated for his milestone performance in Patton, Scott told the Academy he would skip the ceremony to watch a hockey game on TV.  They sent him the award anyway, and he refused it.  Likewise, I’ve had a love/hate relationship with the Oscars.  The best movies and performances often don’t win.  Hell, sometimes they don’t even get nominated.
Still, I loved seeing Tom Hanks win for Philadelphia and thank his gay drama teacher.  And when 11-year-old Anna Paquin, who won for The Piano and stood onstage with absolutely no idea what to say.  Or even the snarky moments, like when Shirley MacLaine won for Terms of Endearment and whispered to co-star Debra Winger:  “This is half yours.”  Winger, who loathed MacLaine, shot back:  “Okay, I’ll take half, then.”
It’s good theater.  For this episode of Cinemavino, we talk about the Oscar noms.  Once again, the Academy got a buncha picks right, and whole buttload of ’em wrong, too.  Having seen all the Best Picture films already, I’ve got some strong opinions.  Damn it, Academy…I just can’t quit you.
My pic for the best film of the year:

  • 63. 1917

1917 hits like a ton of bricks.  It’s a huge achievement and a hell of movie.  I’ll go ahead and predict it for a Best Picture win at the Oscars.  For this mini-episode of Cinemavino, we discuss 1917–spoiler-free–and breakdown the new trailers for Morbius and Black Widow.
We also share some delicious red wine.  The Refugio Pinot Noir from Chile’s Montesecano Winery is quite nice:  It’s earthy, peppery, and more full-bodied that some of its California counterparts.  To learn a little more, click here.
So, kick back and enjoy another fine episode of Cinemavino.

  • 62. And This is 2020

We’ve scanned the movie schedule for 2020, and it truly looks like the best of times and the blurst of times.  Lots of sequels, prequels, remakes, rehashes, reboots, and screwups.  Still, look carefully and you’ll find some good with the bad and ugly.
For this episode of Cinemavino, we discuss the upcoming movie schedule.  We’re really excited for some of it.  (See:  No Time to Die.)  Other stuff?  (Legally Blonde 3?!?) Not so much.  We also pound some delicious red wine.  My upcoming book will pair classic movies with French wine, and it never hurts to brush up on the subject.
Kick back and enjoy another fine episode of our wonderful podcast!

  • 61. Matchups 2: Electric Boogaloo

As kids, most of us loved pitting random action figures against each other.  Superman vs. He-Man, who would win?  (I mean, Superman, duh…)  For this episode of Cinemavino, we match up some powerful pop culture figures and put it to a vote.  Some of the answers may surprise you!
Also, my next book will pair classic movies with French wine.  To check out my previous release, click below!
