About Talk: Reading the book of Hebrews is a good exercise in rescuing the radical grace of Jesus from our tendency to put God back into the judgment box. In Hebrews 8 our author quotes Jeremiah 31. Jesus has written God’s law on our hearts. We don’t need the tablets of stone anymore, we are the new law, our relationship with Jesus is the new covenant. There’s a big difference between the old covenant and the new one. There are no more contingencies. Only receiving is left for us to do. It’s easy to default back. Let’s not do that. Let’s move into a better future. Let’s let our imaginations run wilder.

About Talk: We can choose a history that did not happen to us. The author of Hebrews does this in chapter 5 when they apply the language of Psalm 22 to Jesus. Jesus applied this language to himself when on the cross he said, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me,” a quotation from the psalm. Ben makes the case that this kind of thinking is elemental to faith. We accept other people’s stories as our own. The most basic story of our faith being the story of Jesus. Careful reflection on our own past and the past of our adopted tribe, makes us confident to step into the future in peace and safety. We can do daring things because of where and who we come from.

About Talk: Sometimes we have to change our minds in order to get into the flow of what God is doing. The biggest mind-change I had to face was the one to say yes to being the pastor. The apostle Peter had to change his mind about all the religious rules and traditions he had followed in order to accept those whom God was calling. God keeps making a way for all those who are seeking—many times through us!—if we're willing to keep changing our minds and trusting His lead as a body.
