About Talk: Gwen White focuses on how we all need to get good at giving and receiving apologies. Bad apologies crack relationships. Good apologies can reconnect people who have been separated by hurt. A good apology has three parts: 1) I'm sorry; 2) It was my fault; 3) What can I do to make it right with you? There are psychological reasons that we humans resist apologies, but Jesus is clear about His expectation that we "win one another back" all the time. The goal isn't to assert who is right and who is wrong, but to mend connections, to bring people back together. We all really want good apologies. But they are hard to find. Even more, Jesus tells us that we can forgive others for the hurts they cause us, even when they do not apologize. This process of reflecting on our choices deeply when someone hurts us or is hurt by us can be an opportunity for our growth in understanding ourself and others. But we can't force the process and make it go too quickly. We ought not apologize for things we are not responsible for, but we can use the power of an apology lovingly to understand others and ourselves more deeply with the aim to reconnect. Forgiveness for others comes from our own personal and intimate experience of God forgiving us. Mercy is only possible in this context.
