  • Circuit Breaker Interview: Anthony Carrigan Discusses Life in the Chechen Mob on HBO’s ‘Barry’
HBO‘s new half-hour comedy series “Barry” was an instant hit with fans of Saturday Night Live alum Bill Hader. The comedian stars, writes, directs, and executive produces the show. He co-created the show with multi-Emmy nominee Alec Berg. “Barry” also stars Stephen Root, Henry Winkler, D’Arcy Carden, Glenn Fleshler, Sarah Goldberg, and more.
But it is Anthony Carrigan, who stars as NoHo Hank, the right-hand man to Chechen mob boss Goran Pazar, who stands out in this cast. His character is wacky in the best ways. He’s a lovable mobster. The kind who would make you a sandwich before he has your kneecaps broken.
Before life as the best-dressed mafia member in LA, Carrigan starred as Victor Zsasz on “Gotham,” and also appeared on shows like “Parenthood,” “The Forgotten,” and “The Flash.”
I recently spoke with Carrigan about “Barry,” and especially about NoHo Hank. We also talked about working with the likes of Bill Hader and Henry Winkler. He shared the reasons why “Barry” is such a great show to work on. We talked about how he would spend a day with NoHo Hank. And we also discussed our mutual excitement for the show’s recent season two pickup.
And be sure to check out Alan French’s review of “Barry” here.
We would like to thank Anthony Carrigan for speaking with us about his work on “Barry.”
You can catch up with the series on HBO, HBOGo and HBONow.

  • Circuit Breaker Interview: Justin Hartley Discusses His Work on NBC’s ‘This Is Us’
NBC’s “This Is Us” is one of the most popular dramas on network television.
The series tells the story of the Pearson family in a unique way. Parents Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) raise their three children through the 1980s and 90s. As adults, their three kids are played by Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, and Justin Hartley. The series also stars Chris Sullivan, Susan Kelechi-Watson, Jon Huertas, Eris Baker, Parker Bates, Lonnie Chavis, Niles Fitch, Logan Shroyer, Faithe Herman, Hannah Zeile, and Mackenzie Hancsicsak.
“This Is Us” earned 10 Primetime Emmy nominations for its first season, including Outstanding Drama Series. It has also been nominated twice for the Golden Globe for Best Television Series — Drama. The cast also earned the Screen Actor’s Guild Award for Outstanding Cast on a Television Drama.
Justin Hartley stars as Kevin Pearson, a former high school athlete-turned-actor who leaves his hit sitcom and goes on a search for himself. This road to self-discovery is temporarily derailed by a drug addiction and a trip to rehab. But it also opens him up to face issues from the past.
Hartley got his start in television with a role on NBC’s soap, “Passions” in the early 2000s. He played Oliver Queen/Green Arrow on “Smallville” for five seasons. He appeared on “Revenge,” “Mistresses,” and “The Young and the Restless” before landing what he calls “the role of a lifetime.”
I sat down with Justin a few weeks ago at NBC/Universal’s Summer Press Day. Please enjoy our conversation about his work, the growth he has experienced over the past two seasons, and the show’s outstanding writing.
“This Is Us” will return to NBC this fall. You can catch up on past episodes on Hulu. Justin Hartley and the rest of the cast are eligible for 2018 Emmy consideration.

  • Circuit Breaker Interview: Billy Howle, Ian McEwan, and Dominic Cooke Discuss Life ‘On Chesil Beach’
After appearances at film festivals including Toronto and London, the film “On Chesil Beach” debuted in theaters over the weekend.
The film stars Billy Howle and Saoirse Ronan as newlyweds Edward and Florence. On their wedding night, things go from slightly awkward to disastrous as the young couple learns new things about each other. Only those new discoveries come a little too late. Howle and Ronan also worked together on “The Seagull,” which is also in theaters.
“On Chesil Beach” is based on the 2007 novella by Ian McEwan. The author also adapted the screenplay. McEwan has written a number of scripts and novels, including “The Good Son” and “The Comfort of Strangers.” The 2007 Best Picture nominee, “Atonement,” was based on his novel of the same name. That film also starred Saoirse Ronan in a role that earned her first Academy Award nomination at just 13.
Renowned theater director Dominic Cooke takes his skills to the silver screen in this cinematic debut. Cooke previously directed the three-part miniseries, “The Hollow Crown,” for the BBC.
I recently had the opportunity to talk with Billy Howle, Dominic Cooke, and Ian McEwan about the film. Please enjoy this Circuit Breaker Interview:
“On Chesil Beach” is distributed by Bleecker Street, and is in theaters now.

  • Circuit Breaker Interview: Director Matthew Miele Chats About His New Doc ‘Always at the Carlyle’
In a city full of iconic places, The Carlyle Hotel is one of New York City’s most fascinating.
With a long history of glamour and intrigue, The Carlyle has hosted the very top of the A-list athletes, politicians, royalty, and movie stars. It is also the proud home of the Cafe Carlyle, one of the only places in New York where you can still catch cabaret-style performances on a regular basis.
Documentary filmmaker Matthew Miele brings the story of The Carlyle to life in his fun new film, “Always at the Carlyle.” Through the help of staff members and guests, Miele seeks to preserve the history of this amazing landmark, committing the stories of the rich and famous forever to film.
The documentary includes interviews with George Clooney, Wes Anderson, Jeff Goldblum, Anjelica Huston, Sofia Coppola, and many more. It reveals sweet stories about unexpected people like Jack Nicholson and pranks by Tom Cruise.
Miele brings his brand of reverent wit to the project. He reveres The Carlyle, just as he did when he told the story of the famed department store in “Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s.”
I recently had the opportunity to talk with the director about the film. We discussed what initially captured his attention, and why this was a story he needed to tell. We also talked about how he managed to get the famously discrete staff to open up and share stories. And, of course, how he managed to land interviews with some of The Carlyle’s famous—and infamous—guests.
You can listen to our conversation down below:
We would like to thank Matthew Miele for taking some time to discuss this charming documentary. Be sure to check out the trailer:

“Always at the Carlyle” is distributed by Good Deed Entertainment. It opened last week in New York and expands this week to Los Angeles. Be sure to watch for the film to come to a city near you.

  • CIRCUIT BREAKER INTERVIEW: Richard Loncraine and Imelda Staunton the Familiarity of ‘Finding Your Feet’
“Finding Your Feet” is the story of the rich wife of a British Lord who must rebuild her life after learning of her husband’s years-long affair with her best friend. Part of that rebuilding means moving into her working-class sister’s apartment and rediscovering what life is like without the big house and the sprawling grounds and the garden parties.
Academy Award nominee Imelda Staunton stars as Sandra, the woman at the center of this tale. Staunton was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in “Vera Drake” in 2004. While she had appeared onscreen many times before, that film opened a lot of doors for her. She went on to more films including the “Harry Potter” franchise, “Pride,” and “Maleficent.” These days, Staunton splits her time between the screen and the stage, where she has spent the past several years performing in shows at London’s West End.
Director Richard Loncraine has brought us such films as “Wimbledon,” “Richard III,” and “The Special Relationship.” He also directed pieces of the highly acclaimed miniseries “Band of Brothers,” and was part of the Emmy Award-winning directing team.
I recently had the chance to talk with both Loncraine and Staunton about their work on “Finding Your Feet.” We discussed their initial interest in the project, their hopes for the film as it finds its way to audiences, and more.
We would like to thank Richard Loncraine and Imelda Staunton for taking the time to talk about their film.
“Finding Your Feet” is distributed by Focus Features and is in theaters now.
