* Talking about the overrated and underrated Pixar films in their filmography.

* Is there a time that any Oscar lineup has matched with our own, in any category, 5 for 5?

* Who is the most overdue cinematographer working today now that Roger Deakins and Emmanuel Lubezki have Academy Awards?

* We are recommending some movies that you should watch from the 1970s before getting into a lengthy discussion about the western genre, Mark Johnson’s favorite, and what some of the best and worst have been in history.

COMMENT, SHARE and SUBMIT hashtag questions and suggestions for games in the comments section below or social media. Game hashtags include:

* #CINEPHILESHOWDOWNS

(give two movie or performance choices for us to choose the “better” one)

* #DELETETHEACTOR

(give an Oscar acting lineup and ask us to remove the “weak link” of the lineup)

* #CHOOSETHEGOLD

(name any actor/actress, filmmaker, or craftsperson and we decide which film they should have won the Oscar for, replacing the Academy’s actual winner)

* #ACCIRCUITBREAKER

(any general question about any topic you desire)

On the agenda:

*

Cinephile Showdowns: comparing Karen Peterson’s Top 10s from 2019 and 2018

*

Going through the 2020 slate for Netflix that includes many interesting projects such as: “The Old Guard” from Gina Prince-Bythwoood, “Miss Americana” documentary with Taylor Swift, “Mank” from David Fincher and starring Gary Oldman, “Uncorked” from Prentice Penny, the remake of “Rebecca” from Ben Wheatley, “Hillbilly Elegy” from Ron Howard and starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close, “Da 5 Bloods” from Spike Lee, “The Boys in the Band” with Jim Parsons, “To All the Boys: P.S. I Love You” with Lana Condor, “Eurovision” with Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams, “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” from Charlie Kaufman, “Tigertail” from Alan Yang, “Dick Johnson Is Dead” from Kirsten Johnson, “The Half of It” from Alice Wu, “Crip Camp” from executive producers Barack and Michelle Obama, “Sergio” with Wagner Moura and Ana de Armas, “Over the Moon” from Glen Keane, “Coffee & Kareem” with Ed Helms and Taraji P. Henson, “The Prom” from Ryan Murphy and starring Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman, and “Lost Girls” with Amy Ryan.

*

The first look at the 2020 Emmy Predictions in the categories of Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series. On the drama side, “Succession” and “The Crown” may be the frontrunners but the field is deep this year where plenty of surprises can occur and lower-ranked contenders can easily bubble up. In comedy, we’re saying farewell to plenty which could bode well for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” but watch out for “Silicon Valley,” “Schitt’s Creek” and perhaps “Modern Family” to steal some thunder.

*

Lastly, are “we,” as in pundits, the problem in regards to diversity in the Academy when it comes to Oscars? Are the “Year-in-Advance” predictions creating a problem for films and performers to get their due? This has inspired a longer conversation and future in-depth piece about our influence. We’re discussing the beginnings of it.“
