Circus life means being used to packing light and living in a caravan, a converted school bus, or a hotel room. For hand-balancing sisters Melody and Lily Nolan, who grew up in a travelling circus family, this is simply second nature. 

In this episode, host Maaike Muis follows the sisters of the Nolanders company in the run to the premiere of their performance The Kettle is Always On. We dive into their creative process and discover how personal rituals, artistic choices, and the design of costumes and set come together. Gradually, it becomes clear what the performance is truly about, with the premiere marking one of those defining moments in life when you look back and realize: this stands out.

Het circusleven betekent gewend zijn om licht te pakken en te wonen in een woonwagen, een omgebouwde schoolbus of een hotelkamer. Voor handstandzussen Melody en Lily Nolan, opgegroeid in een rondreizende circusfamilie, is dat een vanzelfsprekendheid.

In deze aflevering volgt host Maaike Muis de zussen van het gezelschap Nolanders in de aanloop naar de première van hun voorstelling The Kettle ls Always On. We duiken in hun maakproces en ontdekken hoe persoonlijke rituelen, artistieke keuzes en het ontwerp van kostuums en decor samen vorm krijgen. Gaandeweg wordt duidelijk waar de voorstelling werkelijk over gaat, met de première als zo’n moment in het leven waarop je terugkijkt en beseft: dit springt eruit.

It started with a sentence: ‘what if you loaded the floor with mats’ and it resulted in the full-length acrobatic performance MAT, about the art of falling and the beauty of failure. Because acrobats prefer to land on their feet, yet many hours of falling precede a successful trick. For this episode, former circus director and podcast host Maaike Muis selected an excerpt from a conversation with one of MAT's performers, Jemma Sneddon. Unlike the previous one, this episode is again entirely in English.

Acrobaten landen tenslotte het liefst op hun voeten, maar aan een geslaagde truc gaan vele valuren vooraf. In deze podcast neemt voormalig circusdirecteur Maaike Muis je mee achter de schermen van MAT. Aan het woord komen onder andere regisseurs Zinzi Oegema en Hanneke Meijers, en je hoort enkele acrobaten vertellen over het gezwoeg in de dikke, zachte valmatten. Maar als iedereen kan vallen en niemand gewond raakt, dan wil iedereen het toch proberen? Want het leven is niet altijd rechtlijnig en we raken af en toe op een zijspoor, maar zeg nou zelf, kun je succesvol zijn zonder te falen? Dan is dat succes een stuk minder zoet, toch?

Anyone who stands on stage dancing and laughing in Chile or Mexico paves the way for an audience to laugh. But how do you transmit this piece of culture to a new audience Itzel and Micaela of Insurgentes Company wonder aloud? Mar & Shalom from Catalonia and Italy instead found a key in the stories and labour of their ancestors and connect with audiences while knitting. This episode is all about identity. Host Maaike Muis brings together the stories of two maker duos whose identities have great significance for the circus they make.

Wie in Chili of Mexico op het podium staat te dansen en te lachen, heeft het publiek op de hand. Maar hoe breng je dit stukje cultuur over op een nieuw publiek, vragen Itzel en Micaela van Insurgentes Company zich hardop af? Mar & Shalom uit Catalonië en Italië vonden juist een sleutel in de verhalen en de arbeid van hun voorouders en maken al breiend contact met het publiek. Deze aflevering gaat over identiteit. The do-it-yourself mentality in circus is strong. So is that of the Maker for a Week exploring what future circus could be. Host Maaike Muis sat down with Berkey and Jakob Jacobsson. What is usually in the shadows, is what they put in the spotlight, such as rope artist Jakob's light installation or Berkey's inventive Chinese pole structure. In this episode, there is much to say about the relationship between the performer and his apparatus, and about ingeniously stretching one's own limits. And all trends and waves aside, during this conversation Maaike discovers a quality of circus that is absolutely timeless.

De doe-het-zelf mentaliteit in circus is sterk. Zo ook die van de Maker voor een week die onderzoekt wat toekomstig circus kan zijn. Host Maaike Muis ging om de tafel met Berkey en Jakob Jacobsson. Wat gewoonlijk in de schaduw staat, zetten zij in de schijnwerpers, zoals de lichtinstallatie van touwartiest Jakob of de inventieve Chinese paalstructuur van Berkey. In deze aflevering valt er veel te zeggen over de relatie tussen de performer en zijn apparaat en over het vindingrijk oprekken van de eigen grenzen. En alle trends en ontwikkelingen ten spijt, tijdens dit gesprek ontdekt Maaike een eigenschap van circus die absoluut tijdloos is.

In this first open-hearted conversation, host Maaike Muis takes us through trends and new waves in circus around the topic of audiences. And what connects these two very different makers is that their research not only goes beyond their main discipline, but also that they want to evoke a physical reaction from the audience.

In deze aflevering kom je erachter waarom er geen snacks te vinden zijn in de kleedkamer van Michael Zandl's crew. En je hoort waarom jij misschien ook in de straps van Cecilia Rosso kunt hangen. In dit eerste openhartige gesprek neemt host Maaike Muis ons mee door trends en nieuwe ontwikkelingen in het circus rondom het thema ‘publiek’.
