Welcome to the first episode of the Sunbox Ambassador Series!!! In this episode Zimbabwean Sunbox Ambassador Bulisile Mguni chats with leading actress Tendaiishe Chitima of Cook Off, a homegrown Zimbabwean feature film that has been acquired by Netflix and will available from June 1st on the streaming platform.
Cook Off is an unlikely feel-good Zimbabwean story that follows the journey of Anesu, a down-on-her-luck single mother from Harare’s Budiriro township. Anesu becomes a national sensation after she qualifies for Zimbabwe’s top reality TV cooking show but soon finds herself out of her depth battling against professional chefs. It features rising sta Tendaiishe ‘Tendie’ Chitima, popular rapper Tehn Diamond, and the much-beloved ‘Neria’ star Jesesi Mungoshi as the grandmother, as well as a host of other familiar faces – and was made against the odds, on a tiny budget. The filmmakers behind Cook Off were trying to restart a once-proud film industry in Zimbabwe that had declined over decades of political and economic turmoil.
