When we examine the ninth commandment, we often summarize it as “do not lie." But upon further examination we find that the commandment is slightly more wordy than that, and perhaps has more subtle nuances than a simple summary. Ultimately, the ninth commandment goes much further, exhorting believers to embrace the aspiration of telling to truth in “full color.” That’s our dream, to speak truth in color, not gray. We are not seeking to blur the lines of honesty, but proactively tell the maximum amount of truth. We renounce disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or deception. We refuse to tamper with or twist God’s word. We feel the freedom and joy in this: “by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of our God.” May God make it so in our church.
