CiTR -- Vivaporú, The Ointment for the Soul episodes

  • Vivaporú, The Ointment for The Soul, Episodio 16: ¡Aniversario!
Today's episode is an extra special one. Vivaporú, el Ungüento para el Alma turns 1!!! And what a year it has been! The DJs celebrate such an event by dedicating a Bolero Special: Part 2 to all of their loyal and very lovely listeners in Vancouver and around the world. Since Vivaporú's first episode was dedicated to Boleros, it only seemed fitting. The DJs remind everyone the origin and meaning of Vivaporú, and the importance of the community it has created in their lives. They also share their hand-curated special playlist that includes legends such as Los Panchos and Cauby Peixoto. Oh, and of course and quick soundscape and cool llama fact also make it into the episode. ¡Feliz Aniversario Vivaporú! ¡Por este y muchos más!

  • Vivaporú, The Ointment for The Soul, Episodio 15: Fruta Special
As an ode to the end of summer *sniff sniff*, Vivaporú comes back with the frootiest of episodes! That's right, the Fruta Special is all about celebrating the gloriousness of those sweet and fleshy and colourful and delicious products of trees and plants (yea yea, sorta copypasted that definition from google lol). The DJs curate a playlist of some of the best fruity songs of Latin America. Inspired by Insta Polls done by their friend Adri, the hosts interrogate each other on their preference of fruits and talk about the different ways in which fruits are eaten back home. YUM! Camels are given the spotlight on this week's cool llama fact cuz, hey! we.are.family. and the Paisaje Sonoro de Latinoamérica becomes a megaphone announcement of a fruit vendor. All this and even more of the frootiest surprises. Make sure you grab una frutita for this one, amigues!

  • Vivaporú, The Ointment for The Soul, Episodio 14: Basorexia
Vivaporú takes over DJ Bruja's couch and a tiny mic! Today's episode from home is dedicated to Basorexia, the overwhelming desire/craving to kiss. The DJs curate a playlist with kissing in mind, but because the current reality does not allow kissing as we know it, the DJs try their best to provide you with a kissing experience like no other (via music, language and dope soundwaves). The hosts also discuss kissing in Latin American cultures, kissing in food and desserts, and the anatomy of besar. Finally, DJ D-Rod and DJ Bruja describe the apprehensive lips of llamas (the cool llama fact of the week amigues!).

  • Vivaporú, The Ointment for The Soul, Episodio 13: Boda Special
It is a very special day in the studio with DJ D-Rod and DJ Bruja. Just kidding amigues, not that special since nobody is getting married, and if they are, THEY ARE NOT INVITING US TO THEIR WEDDING!? How rude. So the DJs decided to create their own wedding/boda special, with some of their favorite wedding party songs to dance to, their favorite latinx wedding traditions, and even a wedding-related cool llama fact. The DJs also dedicate this week's Paisaje Sonoro de Latinoamerica to their parents, who magically all have the same birthday!? What a coinciDANCE! Get ready to nourish your soul and to dance dance dance latinx wedding style!

  • Vivaporú, The Ointment for The Soul, Episodio 12: AfroLatinx (Black History Month Special)
To honor the last day of Black History Month, Vivaporú dedicates this entire episode to AfroLatinx folks and culture, because without them we simply wouldn't be. And that's a fact. The DJs discuss some of their favorite AfroLatinx legends, their art and their music. They also touch upon a brief history of San Basilio de Palenque, the first AfroLatinx community free of colonial America. Oh, and of course, a cool (kewl) llama fact, and the Paisaje Sonoro de Latinoamérica, this time live from YouTube, *cough* we mean, live from Cartagena, Colombia *cough*.

  • Vivaporú, The Ointment for The Soul, Episodio 11: Romanticonas
Vivaporú shows its cheesiest, most romantic and emotional side with a special episode dedicated to Valentine's day. DJ D-Rod and DJ Bruja have a real hard time curating a playlist with some of their favorite romantic songs (as well as some despecho songs), since Latinxs have too many options when it comes to songs about love. For the first time, the DJs decide not to over-talk and let the music speak for itself (don't get used to it however, it may not happen again). The DJs then discuss some cool events happening in Vancouver to celebrate Black History Month (and specially Afro-Latinx communities). And of course, Vivaporú's signature cool llama fact and the Paisaje Sonoro de Latinoamérica also make it into the cut (a very special one, dedicated to Carnaval!). What a time to be alive.

  • Vivaporú, The Ointment for The Soul, Episodio 10: Reggae Latinoamericano
Vivaporú welcomes February with a special episode dedicated entirely to Latin Reggae. The DJs discuss the connection of this genre to the Rastafari movement, its Afrocentric origin (great start to Black History Month) and its migration via the Panamá canal to South America. Additionally, the DJs also tease a little bit about FUNDRIVE! Because just like you, we are also crushing hard on CITR and we want to help it continue doing community radio for everyone. Of course, Vivaporú wouldn't be complete without a Paisaje Sonoro de Latinoamerica and a cool llama fact to end things on a great note.

  • Vivaporú, The Ointment for The Soul, Episodio 9: Sabrosura Vintage
Vivaporú welcomes 2020 with a special topic: SABROSURA VINTAGE, a music genre created and developed by your favorite DJs and your favorite radio show (that's right, Vivaporú is and will be your favorite show soon enough). A mix of Boogaloos, Latin Soul, Guajiras and otros (al that tasty and savory love from the 50s and 60s that Cuban and Afro-American culture blessed us with). If your hips cannot control themselves, you, amigue, are doing it right! The DJs talk about the role of New York in the cooking of these Latin music genres, and how this stew allowed for the climax of salsa in the 1970s. This episode also pays tribute to las reinas, Celia Cruz and La Lupe (because we would not be ere without them, let's face it). Finally, the DJs discuss their love for Latin Soul, and of course, their love for llamas. Here's to a great 2020 filled with Vivaporú, El Ungüento pa' la SOUL! (get it?).

  • Vivaporú, The Ointment for The Soul, Episodio 8: Lo Mejor del 2019
Are.U.Ready.4… the best of the best. The best of the best of the best of 2019. DJ Bruja and DJ D-Rod take on the task of curating a special setlist on this last-episode-of-the-year of Vivaporú with some of their all-time faves *coughs* cuco *coughs again, repeatedly*, as well as some sweeeet new Latin Music gems (here’s looking at chu, Guli). A compilation of nourishing news from the overwhelming 2019 in Latin America is delivered to you by the DJs to end the year Vivaporú-style. DJ Bruja and DJ D-Rod then discuss the 2019 Brazilian-French production Bacuraú, one of the best films of the year. This week’s Paisaje Sonoro de Latinoamérica hails all the way from Buenavista, Santa Cruz, Bolivia, aka DJ Bruja’s home at sunrise. Shoutout to Sr. Rodrigo for this soundscape and for bringing DJ Bruja to this planet. And of course, we couldn’t leave without one last cool llama fact of the DECADE. Brace yourself, 2020…cuz we’ll be back with big quantities of Vivaporú, the Ointment for the Soul.

  • Vivaporú, The Ointment for The Soul, Episodio 7: Spanglish
DJ Bruja and DJ D-Rod switch names for the day. Special guests Daniel and Julio bless the show with their presence in this episode, which is entirely dedicated to Spanglish, one of the greatest communication currencies there is (according to Vivaporú). The DJs explore some of the best examples of musicians who use Spanglish in their music, and they even have the honor of interviewing Jenny and The Mexicats, a favorite Spanglish band of theirs. Part of the interview becomes the Paisaje Sonoro de Latinoamérica for the week. Oh, and of course the DJs make sure they leave you with the usual cool llama fact, because what would Vivaporú be without llamas? We honestly do not want to know.
