The table is a sacred space. In our world, the table declares your social value. The closer you sit from the head table, the more social capital you gain. Whether in the high school cafeteria, a wedding, or an important business function, the table has a way of revealing your value.
It was the same in the time of Jesus. But instead of maintaining the status quo, Jesus ate with the most surprising people. Whether lepers, tax collectors, or the non-religious, Jesus invited them in.
