God is a God-In-Community. There is a divine dance between the three persons of the trinity. The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit are in a community together. They are each coequal, coeternal but also unique in their interplay together.

We are designed by a God-in-community for community.

We can’t live the life God has designed for us in isolation. We must invest and curate relationships that will help us become people of love.

Punk Rock, The Hippies, Tattoos and Hip Hop were once considered on the fringes of culture. Over time, they became mainstream as more and more people adopted their code and lifestyle.

Despite the many churches across Montréal and Canada, our culture today would be more aptly described as, Post-Christian or secular.

When Jesus came on the scene, he too was counter cultural. His views were vastly different than other Jewish Rabbis. In this signature teaching from Jesus in Mark 10, he reminds us that following his way runs counter to the systems of the world.

What was the most controversial part of Jesus’ life and ministry? 

It wasn’t his miracles, or even his subversive teachings. What drew the ire of the religious leaders of the day was who Jesus ate with. 

The table is a sacred space. In our world, the table declares your social value. The closer you sit from the head table, the more social capital you gain. Whether in the high school cafeteria, a wedding, or an important business function, the table has a way of revealing your value. 

It was the same in the time of Jesus. But instead of maintaining the status quo, Jesus ate with the most surprising people. Whether lepers, tax collectors, or the non-religious, Jesus invited them in.

As we continue The Way series with Episode #4, may you be challenged to consider how you too can use your table to build bridges—instead of walls—across our city. 

Jesus is a very different kind of king. 

He famously said, “My kingdom is not of this world.” He went on to describe his subversive kingdom as a small mustard seed that would grow into something prominent. 

What started small, changed everything. What was once overlooked, has changed history.

In John 1 and Matthew 4, we see how the first followers of Jesus were given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It was an opportunity that came with a cost…but a cost these first followers were happy to pay.
