God has spoken; he has revealed himself to us so that we can know him. Looking around nature tells us that the universe has a maker who is powerful and intelligent, but we need more to know God personally. And God has given us his Word so that we can know what he thinks and what he’s like. This Sunday starts a brief series, “A Better View: Seeing Life Through the Psalms.”

It’s a big mistake to think of the Psalms as just “devotional” material. They are packed with robust theology and deep philosophy. Yet we can also connect with the Psalms on a personal level because we find ourselves saying, “I’ve felt that way!” or “Yes, that’s what I’m going through!” as we read. The Psalms are a gut-level honest look at life, and they give us a better perspective no matter what we’re feeling. They are much more than “devotional” readings, they are the collision of theology and emotion that leads us to the One True God.

Jesus defeated the devil and his allies at the Cross. We’ll savor this victory he shares with us by taking communion this Sunday. Colossians 2 tells us more about Jesus’ victory on the Cross; meditating on it this chapter would be a great way to prepare your heart for communion.
