On this special episode, I'm joined by my brother Joseph as we contemplate and reflect on the 160th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg as well as our many visits to the battlefield. We wish we could be there in person this year but we enjoyed a nice conversation on our favorite details of the battle, favorite monuments and locations and what studying the battle means to us.

On this episode I interview Rhode Island historian and author, Rob Grandchamp on the story of the 7th Rhode Island infantry regiment in the Civil War. A regiment that participated in both the Eastern and Western theaters of the war and would suffer terrible losses. This was an intriguing conversation, shedding much needed light on a very brave and overlooked regiment.

Event: Re-dedication of the 7th Rhode Island Monument at Vicksburg National Military Park, Saturday, November 18, 2023 https://www.nps.gov/vick/index.htm

As part of the 160th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, I am highlighting a particular regiment on each day of the anniversary. Today, we remember the story of George Sandoe and the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry. Sandoe would be the first Union solider killed in the Battle of Gettysburg.

On this special Memorial Day episode, I share the account of Robert Gould Shaw at the Battle of Antietam, and he summarizes the horrific combat and terrible loss of life in the bloodiest day of the American Civil War. He also reflects on the impact of such loss on the families on the homefront, who would never hear from their loved ones after that terrible day.

This episode is in tribute to the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment and their engagement at the Battle of Resaca, Georgia on May 14, 1864. The regiment suffered severe casualties while advancing across open ground and their entire color guard was killed or wounded. Included in this episode are several accounts of soldiers who survived the battle and describe the heroic action of the Buckeyes on that fateful day. Lastly, a full casualty list of the 103rd is provided, with the names and types of wounds suffered by these brave men.

A New Season Begins! On this episode I interview Martin Husk, the author of "The 111th New York Volunteer Infantry: A Civil War History." We deep-dive into a compelling conversation of the 111th Regiment and its unique, heroic and troubled history. Missing out on the first half of the war, these New Yorkers would gain their honor in blood on many a battlefield from 1863-1865. Martin's passion for this regiment helps to keep their story alive and bringing attention to these men was an excellent way to kick-off a new season.
