Mary of Magdalene thought Jesus was still dead and His body had been stolen. She stood outside the tomb weeping. But then Jesus appeared and when He said her name, her sorrow turned to joy. If Jesus was still in the tomb life would be filled with overwhelming sorrow. But Jesus is Lord over the grave and He lovingly calls us by name. We have joyful news to share with the world.

Jesus, the night before He was crucified, while having the Passover meal with His disciples, took on the role of a humble, lowly Servant. He served them and us by giving His life. He remains among us as One who serves.

April 2, 2023 Palm Sunday sermon by Craig Johnson at Triumph Lutheran Church, Ferndale, Washington. Text was I Corinthians 5:6-8. Palm Sunday was also Lamb Selection Sunday - the day when the Jewish people would select the lamb for the upcoming Passover Feast. Jesus purposefully entered Jerusalem on that day. He is our true Passover Lamb, who was sacrificed to take away our sins.

March 29, 2023 Lenten service sermon by Craig Johnson at Triumph Lutheran Church, Ferndale, Washington. Text is Mark 15:39. A centurion, a Roman military official, saw how Jesus died and it changed him. He was used to seeing violence, anger and ugliness. That Friday he saw the beauty and grace of Jesus and knew he saw someone unlike anyone else.

In a world full of temptations trying to pull us away from God, we're encouraged to keep in God's love and keep being merciful. We do so because of God's great mercy. We do so confident that God is able to keep us in His loving care.

We look at the story of Simon of Cyrene, who was pulled out of the crowd to help Jesus carry the cross. What would he have learned about Jesus as they walked together up the hill to Golgotha? How did it change his life?

We are to be on guard against dangerous deceivers who are spreading false teaching about Jesus. We give thanks for the glorious truth that Jesus came in the flesh so that He could shed human blood in order to save us humans from our sins.
