Saskatoon's Royal University Hospital and St. Paul's Hospital are both badly over capacity, and the Saskatchewan Health Authority says staff have spent the past few weeks struggling to keep up with the "extreme" pressure. After the NDP released internal memos from the SHA indicating the severity of the issues, the health authority issued a statement acknowledging the capacity problems and outlining what's being done to alleviate the pressure. The SHA says a Command Centre has been activated to help manage patient flow and prioritize the safety of significantly ill patients by ensuring they have a bed and acute care. They're also reviewing which patients can be safely sent home, and have asked the public to be aware of the situation and use walk-in mediclinics for non-emergency treatment. To help explain the current challenges in our hospitals, John is joined by Sharon Garrett, Vice President of Integrated Urban Health for the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
