The federal government is expected to approve the expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline project today. The Liberal government purchased the project from Kinder Morgan Canada for $4.5 billion last year in an unprecedented step, but the project has languished in uncertainty ever since with Indigenous and environmental groups protesting non-stop against it. The pipeline expansion would almost triple the capacity on the existing pipeline that stretches from Edmonton to Burnaby B.C., and provide much-needed relief for Canada's energy industry. Dennis McConaghy is one of Canada's pipeline experts, having served as a VP for TransCanada and authored multiple books on the subject. He joins John now to discuss the effects the approval could have on our struggling oil sector and what roadblocks might remain even if the expected federal approval is granted.
