The Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare returned its final report yesterday, recommending a universal, single-payer public pharmacare system be established across Canada. The council, led by former Ontario Liberal Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins, wants Canadians given access to drugs from a national formulary with "essential medicines" costing $2 and other drugs costing $5 to a maximum of $100/year. The full program is expected to cost more than $15B/year by the year 2027 (which is when the Council expected the formulary could be implemented). Saskatchewan Health Minister Jim Reiter says he's still looking at the recommendations, but wants to know more about Ottawa's funding plans before making any firm decisions. The provincial NDP, however, called on the government to support the single-payer plan in principle. Reiter joins John now to discuss pharmacare in Saskatchewan and his initial thoughts on the national proposal.
