The Gunnar uranium mine site, near Saskatchewan's northern border, was abandoned in 1963, leaving behind a huge environmental mess. Remediation work at the mine site has been ongoing for more than a decade and cost an estimated $280 million so far, with lots of work left to be done. The provincial and federal governments signed a memorandum of understanding back in 2006 to evenly split the cost of the mine site cleanup and remediation (then estimated at just $24.6 million), but according to the Province, Ottawa has only provided about $1 million so far. As a result, Saskatchewan is suing the federal government for $61.8 million. Energy and Resources Minister Bronwyn Eyre joined Saskatchewan media on a tour of the site Monday, and she joins John now to discuss the mine cleanup and lawsuit.
