On today’s show, we look at who’s helping who. In Powell River, many residents go out of their way to help when needed or as a matter of course. We spoke to two people in town who are helping some of our most low income residents - including the manger of the food bank. She's helping feed more than 1,000 people a month.  We also hear from Zoe Ludski, board member of the recently new Community Media Advocacy Center which she helped form over the last year. We speak with Yves Engler. He’s been described as Canada’s Noam Chomsky and puts a critical eye on Canadian foreign policy. He’ll be speaking at the Cranberry Seniors Centre Friday evening. Then an expert on Louis Riel, Dave Doyle, will be in the studio to fill us in on the city’s proclamation to make Nov 16 Louis Riel day in Powell River. Forestry supports our community in many ways, but logging is rarely without controversy. On today’s episode of CJMP News, we’ll be joined live with two guests to talk about logging in Powell River and beyond:

Andrew Bryant will be joining us as well. Andrew has worked as a wildlife biologist and consultant for over 30 years. He was instrumental in bringing back the Vancouver Island marmot from near extinction, working with Island Timberlands to plan a long-term recovery program. Currently, he serves as field trip coordinator with the Malaspina Naturalists Club.

Inga-Lisa Burns will be in the studio to give us an update on the Zero Waste Fair happening this Sunday. WEATHER UPDATE:

A big storm is on its way, with Wind warning in effect for the Sunshine Coast! Strong winds that may cause damage are expected, with winds of 80km/h and 100km/h in some parts of Coastal BC. Winds this strong can topple trees and take down power lines; high winds may also toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.

The third and potentially most powerful storm this month will approach the coast on Saturday. A worst-case windstorm scenario for the Inner South Coast would be a landfall along central or southern Vancouver Island. Total rainfall amounts from these storms may exceed 200 mm for West and Inland areas of Vancouver Island. Inner coastal regions may exceed 100 mm with even higher amounts near the mountains.

As details concerning the precise storm tracks become clearer, warnings will be issued for multiple regions throughout the next couple of days.
