  • The Story of the Magi is Politically Subversive and Anti-War
“The Magi are heroes of our faith because they refused to follow the order of a corrupt and violent political ruler of their day. And do you know what we call that? We call that nonviolent civil disobedience.”

  • Repent! Why Many Christians Totally Misunderstand Repentance
Do you cringe whenever you hear someone yell “Repent!”? The word “repent” isn’t supposed to make you feel guilty or shameful. That’s a misuse of the word. Repent means “change your mind.” Jesus wants us to change our mind about God. We generally think that God loves us and hates our enemies. When we think this way, we need to repent, because God loves all people. And calls us to love all people, too.

  • #EndGunViolenceSabbath – From the Nightmare of Gun Violence to God’s Dreams of Peace
Jesus knew that the way to the radical change that is the Kingdom of God is through nonviolence. When his disciples tried to protect him with the sword, Jesus said to them, “Put your sword back in it’s place, for all who live by the sword die by the sword.” And today, Jesus would come to us and say, “Put your gun back in its place, for all who live by the gun die by the gun.” Jesus knew that weapons of violence only make life more dangerous. They only add to the nightmare. And so he invites us to put our weapons down and trust in the God of love and life that he revealed.

  • Never Lose Heart – Rev. Charlie Hinkle, Guest Speaker
The Bible talks a lot about how we should respond when the going gets rough. The prophet Haggai had something to say about that, and so did Jesus. And so does Charlie Hinkle, in his sermon today.

  • Why God Does Not Want You To Be Good
Religion often tells us that we need to try harder to be good people. You know. Obey the laws. Pay your tithe. Don’t listen to rock music. But what if being good misses the point? What if our religious “goodness” is actually part of the problem? Check out our latest sermon for more!

  • Practicing What You Preach in an Age of Hostility
I want to be upfront and tell you that as a church that is dedicated to our mission of working for a more just and peaceful world through nonviolent action, we’re going to offend some people. We can expect that to happen. And here’s where I’m having a hard time practicing what I preach: We proclaim that God loves everyone just as they are, but I’m having a hard time loving people who disagree with me. And, I hate to admit this, but it’s especially the case when it comes to loving family members who disagree. Anyone else have this problem?
