Today we will be looking at the words “concentrate” and “attention”
The word “concentrate,” spelled C-O-N-C-E-N-T-R-A-T-E, is a verb and a noun. As a verb, this word means to focus on something or someone or to direct attention to that thing. For example, “Kelly concentrated on the teacher in front of the class.” Another definition of “concentrate,” is to gather something into one body, mass, or force. It can also mean to gather or collect something in general. Lastly, the verb “concentrate” means to make something less dilute. This means that in a liquid or substance, you add more water so the substance is not as strong.
The noun, “concentrate” has meanings similar to the verb definitions. Something “concentrated” is rich or full of some type of mineral, substance, or other things. For example, “an orange juice concentrate” is less dilute (meaning less watery) and thus has a higher amount of orange flavoring than regular orange juice.
The noun “attention,” spelled A-T-T-E-N-T-I-O-N, has a few related definitions. Firstly, it can mean to apply the mind to something, an act of focus. Such as in the sentence, “Ryan needed to pay attention to the textbook reading so he could understand the class.” This definition of focus on something may also mean attention that is based on caring for or loving another person.
Second, the noun “attention” can mean an observation or notice. This is most often used when something needs to be looked at. For example, “a computer that needs attention” is a computer that someone needs to look at because it is probably broken.
Lastly, in the military, the command “attention” is used for the position that soldiers stand in, when their heels are together, body straight, arms at their sides, and eyes forward.
