These two great Chicago tunes have an interesting history as singles. "Questions" was the group's first single, released in 1969 on Columbia 44909, and it had a much longer version of the song than on later releases. That first single only climbed as high as #71 on the pop chart. The song was re-released in an edited version (one verse missing) on this single, backed by the group's dynamite cover of "I'm A Man", and finally made it to the Top 40 1971. This is that release, and a powerful two-sided hit it was (and remains)! By the way, "I'm A Man" is also a dramatically edited version of the 7-plus-minutes LP cut. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Columbia Records factory sleeve. It has Near Mint labels and gorgeous, pristine Mint sound, despite clearly having been played on a jukebox (must have had a good needle!). (This scan is a representative image from our archives.)

Does it strike you how often a singer's debut single turns out in retrospect to have been their greatest song, or at least one of their greatest? "Solitary Man" is not just a great song, it's a masterpiece in which Diamond writes of a personal pain in a way that makes it universal. This is a beautiful copy of the rarely seen first pressing from 1966, with the terrific "Do It" on the B side. Diamond re-released the song in 1970 on Bang 571, and it reached #21 on the U.S. Billboard Singles chart. Note: This is the nicest copy of Diamond's first release I've yet had in the store, with pristine Mint labels and very nearly Mint vinyl and audio.

This great cover of the Joe South tune (originally recorded by Billy Joe Royal) is backed with a brooding, tuneful rock track that will quickly become a favorite! Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Tetragrammaton Records factory sleeve. It has Mint labels and very nearly Mint vinyl (styrene) and audio. The A side audio sounds pristine — no surface noise to speak of and no distortion; the B side has a touch of surface noise during the "thunder" sounds at the beginning of the track, but no distortion.

It's sobering to realize that this top-notch rocker failed to chart when released, even though it was following up on Holly's huge hit, "Peggy Sue." I suspect that radio programmer confusion over records on Brunswick by the "Crickets" and those by Holly must have played a part. At about the same time this tune came out, the Crickets were having hits with both "Oh, Boy!" and "Maybe Baby." Still, just 'cause it was overlooked in 1958 doesn't mean it should be missing from your personal collection of essential Buddy Holly! Great B side, too, as usual. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Coral Records factory sleeve. It really has no notable flaws, grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio). Get ready for a gorgeous and big sound (have a listen to the mp3 snippet)!

In case you've never heard the flip side of this northern soul classic, you're missing out...! It's at least as tasty, if not more so, than the main course. That's why we keep a snippet of the song in the Classic 45s "jukebox." This is one of the nicest copies of Deram 85038 I've ever seen, with flawless sound. Note: This copy has a drillhole and comes in a vintage Deram Records factory sleeve. It grades very close to Mint in appearance, and the audio sounds pristine Mint on both sides!
