This essential single has a delightful 3:57 edited version of the much longer (5:56) album cut. I've made an even shorter — but still, at 2:30, it's about as twice as long as usual for my jukebox "snippets" — mp3 snippet so you can hear this particular recording, and so I can enjoy even more of the song as I rotate through my snippets playlist. :-) Note: This copy comes in a vintage ABC/Dunhill Records factory sleeve. This copy has Mint labels, and very nearly Mint looking vinyl. The audio grades Near Mint with a touch of surface noise occasionally audible. (This scan is a representative image from our archives... On a side note, I still struggle with what genre to put this in. I finally went with Progressive Rock this time out, but previously I've just lumped it in with "Power Pop." But as Power Pop it lacks a strong electric guitar lead with a catchy riff. Steely Dan made their own sound, even at its most conventional and approachable, as on this big 1972 hit.

Originally released on King 5614. Following hot on the heels of the Mar-Keys' astonishing "Last Night" the year before, this recording was "instrumental" (sorry about that) in paving the way for the sound that became known as funk. With its staccato syncopated beats and short sharp strokes, "Night Train" was a major stepping stone in 1960's soul music. I'm putting a snippet of it in the jukebox not only because of its importance to rock'n'soul history, but also because, well, you just don't hear enough classic James Brown these days! This reissue, which has the gorgeous original Mono recordings of both of these essential James Brown tracks, is now out of print.

Besides having one of this group's best-loved hits on the A side, I also treasure this single for the lovely, tender, and unexpected folk number on the flip, which by the way is an early songwriting credit for a young Warren Zevon, who had recorded the song in 1966 under the pseudonym "Lyme" as part of "Lyme & Cybelle." This is the rare first pressing of the group's first — and only — #1 hit single, which has the dark blue White Whale label. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage White Whale Records factory sleeve. It grades very close to Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio). The B side audio sounds pristine. Here's a remarkably nice copy of this 1960s Rock classic, impossible to find in decent condition but a single I always try to keep in stock. This time I lucked out: This copy miraculously retains pristine audio — so special I recorded it quickly to iTunes and then made an mp3 snippet so you can hear for yourself! "For Your Love" was this seminal Hard Rock group's first and biggest U.S. hit. If I'm not mistaken, this is the combination of Yardbirds that found Jeff Beck playing lead guitar. As I recall, Eric Clapton left the group earlier in 1965, sort of in protest to the other members' interest in abandoning pure Blues and RnB for a catchy pop song like "For Your Love." All I can say is, "For Your Love" may be a catchy pop song as done by some other band, but this Yardbirds manage to put a muscular, almost sinister cast to the number, making it a prime example of hard rock, in the style being hammered out by bands like the Rolling Stones and Animals at the time. Note: This copy comes in a vintage Epic Records factory sleeve. The labels are very close to Mint, with just a touch of "bubbling" but no ringwear. The vinyl (styrene) grades a strong EX, reflecting some light scuffing. The price reflects a premium for the Mint audio, matching the best I've ever had. (The B side audio is Near Mint.)

This is a new, unplayed promo copy from the Louise Neal 45 Collection, in its original ABC-Paramount factory sleeve. This early Impressions 45 didn't even chart in the Black/RnB market in 1962, but it delighted me enough to make an mp3 "snippet" for you to hear. The B side shows the group still transitioning from a Doo-Wop sound. If you like the Impressions and don't know or don't have these rare tracks, you won't be disappointed. :-) Note: This 45's labels have very light storage wear, grading Near Mint. The vinyl looks untouched, but has a very mild, no-impact storage warp that lowers the grade to Near Mint. The audio sounds pristine Mint, both sides!

By the way, both this rarely heard single, and "That Girl" were non-album singles that were previously unreleased until gathered into Wonder's 2-album Greatest Hits compilation released in 1982.

This is a terrific edited cut from the 5:03 LP version, and it's this tune that ranks the highest of all the Prince singles in Dave Marsh's Top 1,001 Singles list. And as if the A side weren't reason enough to own this classic single, the B side is one of those super-special, non-LP cut offerings Prince managed to throw around for free on his 1980's singles.
