Esteemed motorsports and skiing photographer Jutta Fausel-Ward joins Stewart on episode 195 of the weekly Classic Auto Mall Show. Jutta was born in East Berlin in the 1940s before getting involved in photography, particularly of auto racing and eventually moving to the United States and settling down in California. She has captured 186,000 photographs!

She discusses how she became involved in photography and eventually concentrated not only on Formula 2 racing but also downhill skiing. Jutta talks about her early life growing up on a farm in Germany in the 1940s and borrowing a passport from a family member to leave the country and see her first auto race. She discusses travelling from East Germany to West Germany as a child.

She had a lab in her family’s cellar at their home in East Germany where she could develop her pictures. She discusses how she liked black and white, but magazines often needed color images. Jutta wanted to be a photographer so she could see the world, not just sit in an office all day.
Her early career included shooting hill climb races and circle track events in Germany. She then went to her first Formula One Race at Nurburgring in about 1962 and being in the pits with legendary F1 driver Jim Clark. She asked Brian Chapman if she could sit in the car after practice, but nobody took a picture of her in the car.

She discusses her career and friendship with Mario Andretti and Colin Chapman of the Lotus F1 team and going to dinner with them and enjoying Johannesburg Shaft Red Berries Drink. Nurburgring is such a long track, but since it was over three days she could spend a day in the pits and then move around the track. She discusses the Flugplatz at Nurburgring where cars would get airborne and having someone drive her around the track on a motorcycle to different locations. Jutta husband was a designer for the Dan Gurney All American Race Team.
