In 1997 Ellen DeGeneres did more to influence Americans' attitudes about gay rights than any other celebrity or public figure ever.* This was accomplished through 'The Puppy Episode' the episode of The Ellen Show where Ellen came out as a lesbian to the world. Dava Savel helped write that episode, craft the season that ran up to that episode, won an Emmy, and changed the world.

How does one become one of the greatest character actors of all time? Jim Piddock shares his journey to success.

Jim Piddock is an actor, writer, and producer. He made his theatrical debut in the U.S. in "The Boy's Own Story", a one-man show about a soccer goalkeeper, at the Julian Theatre in San Francisco.

He appeared in his first movie in the top-grossing film of 1989, "Lethal Weapon 2", in which one of his lines, "But…you're black" in answer to Danny Glover's request to emigrate to South Africa, became a catchphrase for the film. But it is probably his diverse performances in the improvised Christopher Guest comedies "Best In Show" (as the Dog Show commentator with Fred Willard), "A Mighty Wind", and "For Your Consideration" that he has gained the most attention as a chameleon-like character actor, barely recognizable from role to role.

Stu Shostak, TV historian, joins me to talk career and the new documentary by CJ Wallis, 'Stu's Show' which focuses on Stu's friendship with Lucille Ball, Stu's love of classic TV, and his struggles with the health care system when his girlfriend (future wife) Jeanine suffered a major health crisis.

Stu and I chat a lot about his early work as a ticket distributor for popular TV shows, his becoming the warm-up act for TV audiences such as Silver Spoons, his friendship and time working with Lucille Ball as her personal film archivist, and his time on the set of Life with Lucy. If you love Lucy you're in for a treat with this discussion. If you love Lucy you're really gonna love the documentary. We cover a lot of great stories in the interview but the movie goes even deeper.

We also discuss elements from the documentary relating to Stu's battle with the health care companies as the primary advocate for his girlfriend (future wife) Jeanine. Stu and Jeanine's story will inspire and move you. I was left thinking, if anything ever happens to me, I hope I have a Stu in my life to have my back like Stu had Jeanine's. It's a great story to prove to everyone you should never give up.

We talk briefly but the documentary goes a bit deeper into the actual wedding of Stu and Jeanine and the who's who of classic TV stars in attendance. How this community of classic TV stars all rallied around Stu and Jeanine when Jeanine got sick was extremely touching. Which classic stars? Ed Asner, Dick Van Dyke, Tony Dow, and many more.
