Barrymore portrayed the role of Scrooge on radio beginning in 1934 and continued in one form or another for more than 20 years. Only twice did Barrymore not perform as Scrooge. Lionel’s brother John stood in on the 1936 appearance when Lionel Barrymore’s second wife Irene Fenwick died of influenza.
