December 25, 2017Classic Christmas Radio Theater - Lionel Barrymore as ScroogeMayor of the Town from December 24, 1942. Lionel Barrymore, usually appearing on this program as the Mayor, sets aside his usual role to perform as Scrooge in the Dickens classic A Christmas Carol. Barrymore portrayed the role of Scrooge on radio beginning in 1934 and continued in one form or another for more than 20 years. Only twice did Barrymore not perform as Scrooge. Lionel’s brother John stood in on the 1936 appearance when Lionel Barrymore’s second wife Irene Fenwick died of influenza. And in 1938 Barrymore himself was ill and his place was taken by Orson Welles. Also Treasury Star Parade from Christmas Day 1942.
