Clothes make the man and costumes might just make the character. Right now at the FIDM Museum & Galleries in DTLA, you can see the 11th Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design exhibition. On view are more than a hundred costumes from this “Golden Age” of television – pieces from The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Feud: Bette & Joan, Big Little Lies and many more.

FIDM spokesman Nick Verreos gave us a tour of the exhibit and spilled some dirt about how a priest’s robe in Milan inspired the designs for The Handmaid’s Tale, why women in the ‘50s braved the LA heat to wear furs, how wetsuit zippers kept costume malfunctions at bay during Hairspray Live, and why you should come to the exhibit just to see gowns from The Crown.

Five USC grads wanted to make a movie about film music, so they started cold calling composers for interviews. After one big break, they were off and running with a movie that’s already picked up eight film festival awards. Matt Schrader directed Score: A Film Music Documentary. Here he is with KUSC’s John Van Driel.

Today’s Out and About is a Friday film chat with Gail Eichenthal and LA Times and KUSC film critic Kenneth Turan. Today’s they’re talking about the documentary “Dolores”, playing at the Nuart Theatre through September 14th.

Cello is the title of a new 20-minute film about one man’s battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and the choices he faces. Renowned cellist Lynn Harrell makes his acting debut as the main character Ansel Evans, a master cellist diagnosed with ALS, a progressive disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. As his condition worsens, Ansel makes the decision to minimize the physical and emotional suffering for himself and his loved ones, culminating in a stirring farewell symphony concert.

Music is at the heart of Cello and Randy Kerber is the film’s composer. He is an acclaimed composer and keyboardist who has been involved in over 800 films including an Oscar nomination for Best Original Score for the motion picture The Color Purple.
