What if, instead of playing an instrument, you wore your instrument? That’s exactly what two performers will do Tuesday night at Walt Disney Concert Hall for an LA Phil Green Umbrella concert.

The two performers are Claire Chase, a flutist and founding member of International Contemporary Ensemble, and composer, violinist, and sound artist Pauchi Sasaki, who has created what she calls Speaker Dresses, for a piece called Gama XV.

The worlds of classical and electronic music come together this weekend in Little Tokyo. It’s all part of a concert and community arts festival hosted by the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Chamber Orchestra and dreamed up by YMF music director Yuga Cohler and composer Stefan Cwik. The event will combine the music of Igor Stravinsky, Benjamin Britten, and LA-based DJ and electronic musician Flying Lotus in a unique concert experience. Yuga Cohler joins KUSC’s Brian Lauritzen to discuss the festival.

Sandy DeCrescent has been the go-to orchestra contractor in Hollywood for almost 50 years. When John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith or James Horner or Henry Mancini were ready to record their latest film score, they called DeCrescent first. This Sunday, April 8th, it’s Mozart among the mammoths: the second annual KUSC Kids Discovery Day at the Natural History Museum of LA County. The whole family is invited to this children’s music festival in one of LA’s architectural treasures, the 105 year old Natural History Museum. Gail Eichenthal has a preview.

Putting on Shakespeare’s Hamlet and George Bernard Shaw’s Saint Joan with a cast of four people started as a way for fledging New York theater company, Bedlam, to keep their costs low. The gimmick paid off and five years later, they’re still performing the plays to rapt audiences. This week Bedlam comes to the Broad Stage, so we asked Artistic Director Eric Tucker how four actors become more than twenty-five characters.

Eric Tucker is Artistic Director of Bedlam, a NY-based theater company that made a name for themselves with a four-person production of Hamlet and Shaw’s Saint Joan. Bedlam’s bringing both plays to the Broad Stage. Tucker spoke with KUSC’s Alan Chapman about how the company got their evocative name and why their productions stand out.
