This is Karganoff's response to Tchaikovky's March of the Wooden Soldiers in the Children's album, op. 39 No. 5 and of the same piece in the Nutcracker's Suite. Tchaikovsky was a great idol for Karganoff.

It is a reference to Schumann's Album for the Young op. 68, which was published 10 years before Grieg wrote this piece. In Schumann's Album there are three pieces without a title but with *** as a placeholder title instead.
