The CLC Connects Podcast is on a short break while we work behind the scenes to bring you a new and improved listening experience, but we also know its important to fill that space you reserve time to listen to every other Tuesday. In this spirit we’re bringing back some of our most popular episodes from our first two seasons with some added content. You can think of this as season 2.5. 

Today we’re starting the episode off with a condensed version of the interview I did with Melanie Bromberek, CLC’s horticulture coordinator. Melanie gave us her expert fall gardening advice. A year later, I can vouch for her- my garden has looked better than ever this season. 

Maybe you’re not interested in gardening, but your kids are. Earlier this summer Eliza Fournier, CLC’s Urban Farm director, took content producer Jake Patterson and writer Austin Weber out on a tour of the Green Youth Farm located in the Greenbelt Forest Preserve in North Chicago. What you’ll hear next is all about CLC’s connection with Green Youth Farm followed by two high school students who are working their first jobs as farmers. 

On the last episode of season two Jessey Prugh and Sheldon Walcher chat about creativity in the workplace and the growing role of AI in the creative process. Sheldon also previews the new live entertainment production certificate at CLC.

This week Jessey Prugh hosts Laura Otto, CLC's professor of English and one of the organizers of the arts group, Voice of Lake County.

On this week's episode of CLC Connects, Jessey Prugh talks with CLC's Urban Farm director Eliza Fournier. Eliza has helped train over 200 urban farmers and has been a pioneer in the urban farming movement. Together we'll dive into the world of urban farming and talk about the new facility coming to Waukegan's Lakeshore Campus. As urbanization continues to shape our communities, urban farming has emerged as a solution to promote sustainability, self-sufficiency, and community health. We discuss how urban farming is not about raising cows in the middle of the city, but rather a growing movement that has gained popularity in Lake County and beyond. Join us as we explore the benefits and challenges of urban farming and learn how we can bring sustainable agriculture to our cities.

April 25, 2023: Today on the podcast host Jessey Prugh talks with CLC's professor of meteorology Eric Priest about the wildly unpredictable weather patterns that come with springtime. This week on CLC Connects, we’re taking on the topic of sustainability with my guest David Husemoller, CLC’s Sustainability Manager. Today where climate change, pollution, and resource depletion are significant challenges, sustainability has become an increasingly important topic affecting us all. In this episode, we will explore what sustainability means, why it's important, and what we can do to promote sustainable practices in our daily lives. David will also preview the upcoming Green Living Fair happening at the University Center on April 15. 

DIY (Do-It-Yourself) culture is a phenomenon that has gained massive popularity in recent times. It is all about taking things into your own hands and making something unique and special from scratch. One of the most significant events in the DIY world is the Maker Faire, which brings together DIY enthusiasts to showcase their creations. In this episode, Jessey and Rob Twardock discuss the connection between DIY culture, Maker Faire, and robotics, and how they are impacting the world. Interest piqued? Vaccines have played a critical role in public health throughout history, from ancient civilizations' use of variolation to modern vaccination. The English physician, Edward Jenner, discovered modern vaccination in the late 18th century by injecting cowpox into a young boy, which led to immunity against smallpox. Vaccines were later developed against other diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and tuberculosis, as well as viral diseases chicken pox and shingles. 

The new shingles vaccine, called Shingrix was approved around 2017 and is recommended for individuals over 50 years old. The vaccine boosts the immune response to the virus, reducing the risk and severity of shingles symptoms.

February 28, 2023: Spring break is right around the corner, a nice time away from classes that is often reserved for travel. While some of us have trips lined up, some of us are staying home. It’s important to know that whatever you do this year, you can have rewarding international experiences that have the potential to change your life. We have a few ideas for how you can gain new global perspectives no matter what you choose to do this year.

Attend cultural events locally. Here in Lake County, we’re lucky to be sandwiched between two major cities that offer events from a variety of cultures that showcase music, dance, food, and other traditions from all over the world. Head north to Milwaukee or jump on the Metra and head south to Chicago and check out their Saint Patrick Day parades. Or stick around here and check out Switchback on March 19 at the James Lumber Center. This personable, talented duo will be playing their brand of eclectic Celtic and Americana. Switchback captures the Irish of today with an exciting mix of mandolin, guitar, bass and unique harmonies. Bonus: CLC students get discounted admission to most JLC events.

Watch international movies and TV shows, read international literature or follow social media accounts based outside of the US.  Experiencing content from different countries can expose you to different cultures and perspectives. You can also watch foreign-language films with English subtitles to improve your language skills.

Make friends with an international student and learn more about their culture by becoming a Friendship Family. A Friendship Family is a local community member or family who is interested in showing hospitality to international students by inviting them into the daily rhythms of their lives (i.e. children’s sporting events, family outings, game nights, community events, holiday meals, etc.). Friendship families and their student(s) can decide how frequently to meet, typically 1-2 times a month during the academic term. Students will not live with the friendship family. Everlasting friendships and connections are bound to happen.
